  • getting medical treatment on B1 B2 visa

my mother recently visited US on b1 b2 and had to undergo minor treatment at a hospital . she was attending a wedding ceremony and injured her foot ; the family who had invited her said they will take care of the bills . However the bills are being sent to us by the hospital after one month . She will be applying for an AOS soon to get her GC .will this (non payment of med bills) affect her application since at the time of getting treatment she did not even have a Social Security number or for that matter she is still here on a valid i-94 and does not have a social security .please advise .allreplies will be appreciated

You do not need a SSN to pay Medical bills, a valid Credit Card will do.

Cool: Well, this just isn't...er, cool.

Why does your family not fulfill its commitments? Why do you believe that your mother is somehow not obligated to meet her commitments? With your assistance, why is she trying to steal medical services?

Quite honestly, I hope that her AOS is denied. America doesn't need someone with such low morals.

Unfortunately, it seems that you've already immigrated to America. In my opinion, that's just too bad.

AS Theone said, you do NOT need a SSN to meet your obligations and pay your bills.

The hospital will send the bills to the address of the patient, FYI. Basically, public hospitals will send the bills 30 days after discharge from the hosptial and cannot send them to collection agency after 120 days to maintain its 501c3 status. Personally, I would submit these bills to your family member who volunteered to pay these on your mother's behalf. If they are unwilling or unable to pay, contact the hospital and set up a payment arrangement, tell them that a family member was supposed to pay b/c of the incident happening in their place, and if any financial assistance is available, depending on how much the bill. This is well within the law. It is not considered non-payment until it goes into collection with a collection agency.

As for the AOS, it will not do anything.

Appenantly, you know very little about the medical profession just as you do about the immigration, Guijin. Hospitals generally allow 120 days fot the patient to pay in full, make payment arrangements, and/or seek financial assistance. And with an accident happening on another private property, it is quite probable that third party insurance may be involved. And with that type of situation, the insurance company may wait 90 days to send payment to the hospital. And until it goes to a collection agency, it is not considered nonpayment.

For Third Party Insurance to be involved, there would first need to be a legal liability and secondly you would need to prove it.

              Possible, but unlikely.

what do you think the odds are that the hospital bill will be paid for by American citizens instead of the patient?

Even if the bill is sent to collections, you may be offered a payment plan or some other alternatives to pay your bill. If you pay your bill in full there's no reason to render you (or your mother) a public charge. If you're already subject to a collections agency make sure you honor your bill and pay it in full.

And since when inability to pay a medical bill makes a monster out of a person? Make sure you watch those words, it can easily happen to ANYBODY!

Technically it is not debt UNTIL it is sent to collections. The OP has several options available, but given the extreme lack of detailed information, it is only an estimate.

Considering the person was attending a wedding at a physical location would indicate liability coverage since most states have either voluntary or mandatory laws for such events.
