I've been having a long distance international relationship for about 6 years now. We have decided to marry and I want to file the F-1 Petition so he can come to the States and we can wed. The problem is, I do not think I am financially capable of the affadavit. I work full time in retail and I take good care of myself but I am not rich, I do not have a fat bank account. Is this a factor that may prevent my fiance from coming? I mean I can afford the both of us when he's here with me until he can work too, but I live paycheck to paycheck and also pay for University. Is there anything I can do? Thanks..

Its something ur going to have to decide urself. Bringing him over is great in theory, but he wont be able to work until his work permit becomes available.
For ur paperwork, or his, u need to be able to meet the requirements to fill out the affidavit of support. Dont take this lightly, if it goes wrong in ur relationship ur still accountable for him. If u can meet the standards requested then fill out the paperwork. They are not bothered about anything else> They set the limits, u meet them, or u dont. If u dont then look to see if u can get a co sponsor, ur parents for example. If u do then ur fulfilling the obligation set. They dont need to know what u spend ur money on. They just need to know u earn it.
Why a F1 visa?

No, you do not have to be rich.
But you (the US citizen) has to make a certain amount of money per year.
Somone said u do not even need 20 grand...its now how much someone has,how much someone makes,
I am not sure anymore about the amount u have to make per year, but its something like 10 times more than the proverty level, which also depense what state the US citizen lives in,.
I came here with a fiance visa and my wife had to provide her income from 3 years past,to show she has a study income she needed every single paystub, bankstatemts from 3 years past, everyhting needed to be copied and notorized...her tax returns of 3 years...
One of the reasons the US citizen or the sponser must make a certain amount of year is to show INS in case the immigrant visa is not working etc,the US citizen MUST be able to provide for the immigrant,so he can not use the government money aka fincial support from the country.
Basically, the money should be an amount where u can easily support the husband and yourself with the money you make etc.
What was interesting, how much money I had as a fiance to the US did not matter, even though i safed over 10 grand...my money or my savings did not matter.
Some people assume, just to put like 20 grand into someones account to show INS u have enough money.Wrong....thats why they are going 3 years back and wanna see every single months bankstatement,W2's from the last 3 years etc etc.
It was a pain, from my wifes part, cause it consumed lots of time and $$$.
Now remember though, that was over 5 years ago...things probabaly changed, either worst or better.Don't know.
Hope that helped

the rules have changed since then HBKHBK. go to www.uscis.gov and go for policy and memoranda research the past few months for memoranda re affidavits of support, specially since September, and you will find out the requirements have changed dramatically, for better, of course.
