  • Visa for an internship

    Hi,

    I am a French student and I wanted to know if I need a J-1 visa to enter the USA as an intern. Even if I am not paid for this internship ? Or a tourist visa would be available? I would be in the USA for 3 months;

    Thx

      Hi Nicky!

      Is it true what they say about french ******? I have always wanted to know.

      Any way, if you want to come to the USA as an intern, you best do it on a J-1. Even though you will not be paid, a J-1 will decrease your chance of being turned around at the Port of Entry POE.

      See, the thing about unpaid internships is they have to pass the smell test of the Dept of Labor (DOL). The DOL has made it known that an unpaid internship is actually employment is someone who is authorized to work gets paid for the same position. If you come here as a "visitor" but engage in such an activity it can come bac and haunt you at a later time.
