i-94 renewal

european friend is here on a 5 year E2 visa. he went to the bahamas 2 years ago to get a new i94 and to "activate" the visa (don`t know if activate is the right word). anyway they gave him 2 years on the i-94. now the time is up soon and he has to leave the country again to get the i-94 renewed again (visa still good for 17 months). now the question. can he go to canada and on the way back on the canadian/US border get the i-94 or does it have to be overseas? (dont tell me mexico....wont happen)

why doesn't he visit the closest ins office to his residence,they may be able to stamp it for him

they wont do it. he checked in to this. so does canada work?
