NEW DELHI: Inaugurating the Dalit-Minority International Conference here on Wednesday, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said it was necessary to make a distinction between the problems faced by Dalits and those by minorities. "Dalits have faced a unique discrimination in our society that is fundamentally different from the problems of minority groups in general. Untouchability is not just social discrimination. It is a blot on humanity," Dr. Singh said.

Dr. Singh pointed out that even after 60 years of Constitutional and legal protection and State support, Dalits still faced social discrimination.

    Malinsky,

I think you are still having an impression of India in late 60's and 70's. Indian's is a country with vast majority of people from different ethnic backgrounds and culture and known to tolerate each other. In fact the status of Dalits are much more better and have more meaningful reservation system for them based on their background and the system is working very well for the past so many decades. Even in advanced countries, there are always beggars and I do see many whites begging in our freeway everyday. Can this be generalized as well?

As with many other eastern Asian countries, which are heavily populated along with the tropical climate, such epidemics and deceases are bound to be there. In fact their immune system is much better than yours and they did survive very well even during such epidemics!

I believe you are most color conscious and want to have some company Unfortunately, no person from Indian community is going to support in your racial slur.

Look at your universities and see how much percentage of foreign students are from India. The current work forces both in front and back in India working on various areas are highly skilled and educated. The level of grass root level education is far better over there and the number of people graduating in Science and Math every year is way more than what the US universities are doing here. The lack of further interest in the US students fuel this issue further and results in various companies moving there offices all the way around the globe to find competent people over there.

India has 32 official languages and host of many different religious beliefs. This is the country which has a majority of Muslim population than that of any Muslim countries and we still co-exist with them peacefully. There may be some difference and issues stir up from time to time on some sensational issues, but that cannot be considered as a regular norm. Ask any of your friend who visited there about the hospitality they got and how they are accommodated. [I doubt you might have met anyone who traveled there to tell you the reality].

Do not read in between lines and come to a conclusion and generalize things. In a huge democratic country with billions of people, differences exist, but getting resolved through various resolution processes. I am an Indian who traveled a lot not only within India and also to various other countries including US. Only here I am coming across with people like you, who start this type of racial slur. I hope you will learn from India on despite various differences in region, language, culture, ethnicity, color and economic background, how a progress can still be made. I hope you are still talking over your cell phone on the outdated network! [FYI: Outside US, GSM is the norm and your existing cell phones even don't work.] You better grow-up soon to realize the reality.

    Thanks

Shashi Baliga, Hindustan Times, August 27, 2006

Given our genetic diversity, when a fair-skinned Punjabi of Aryan descent dismisses a dark-skinned Dravidian as a ˜Madrasi', what it essentially amounts to is racism. It is the same atavistic urge that makes white skins suspicious of brown skins. And it is what makes Indians put a premium on fair skin, whether in the marriage market, at a job interview or when adopting a child.

The average South Indian who responds to the ˜Madrasi' tag by labelling everyone north of the Vindhyas a ˜Punjabi' puts up a racial wall in his mind as well. Move to the North-East and you'll be told tales of more overt racism. "We're simply not looked upon as Indians," says Khanchinpau Zo from Manipur. Most Indians from the hill states of the Northeast will tell you how they have to face an array of prejudices and preconceived notions, the commonest being that girls from the Northeast are ˜easy', and that everyone from the region does drugs.

Sometimes, they are even denied entry to discos and pubs. A TV anchor from Sikkim was turned away along with his friends from Elevate, a Noida discotheque"”while others queuing up after them were let in. He was later ushered in by the bouncers when he made a call to the club's PRO. The Northeast states, too have pejorative terms for outsiders, and several have seen attempts at ethnic cleansing directed against ˜mainland Indians'.

As for all those protesting the way Indians with long beards are singled out at international airports today, they should perhaps try asking Sikhs what it was like after Indira Gandhi's assassination. And if you're outraged at the manner in which all Asians are being tarred with the terrorist brush abroad, hear what Samuel Fatai, a 24-year-old Nigerian studying at Delhi University, has to say: "I've been called kalu, Habshi, Negro, all sorts of names. I've felt insulted so often on flights"”airhostesses have a way of letting you know how unwelcome you are, and Indians excel in it. I have been strip-searched at most Indian airports even before 9/11."

The worst came after the Rahul Mahajan cocaine scandal, when Fatai was picked up by the Delhi police and kept in illegal confinement for three days. Why? They suspected he was a cocaine peddler. Says Fatai wryly, "Indians don't want to make friends with a black man. Unless, of course, they get cocaine at discounted rates." He echoes what most people of African descent will tell you in a candid moment: INDIANS ARE AMONG THE MOST COLOUR-CONSCIOUS AND RACIST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD.

There are about 3,000 castes and more than 25,000 subcastes in India. More than 165 million people in India are considered "Untouchable" "” people tainted by their birth into a caste system that deems them impure, less than human. They are known as Dalits, and face discrimination in every aspect of their lives. Dalits are not allowed to drink from the same wells, attend the same temples, wear shoes in the presence of an upper caste, or drink from the same cups in tea stalls. India's Untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten, and raped with impunity by upper-caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place. Merely walking through an upper-caste neighborhood is a life-threatening offense.

One million Dalits work as manual scavengers, cleaning latrines and sewers by hand and clearing away dead animals. 40 million people in India, most of them Dalits, are bonded workers, many working to pay off debts that were incurred generations ago. These people work under slave-like conditions. The majority of Dalits live in segregation and experience violence, murder, rape and atrocities to the scale of 110,000 registered cases a year according to 2005 statistics. No one believes these numbers are anywhere close to the reality of crimes committed against Dalits. Most crimes go unreported.

According to the American Community Survey of the U.S. Census Bureau, the Asian Indian population in the United States grew from almost 1,678,000 in 2000 to 2,319,000 in 2005: a growth rate of 38%. In the 1970s, 50,000 Indian Ugandans were forced out of Uganda by Idi Amin, and were not permitted to resettle back in India by the Indian government. As a result, most opted to settle in the UK or Canada. According to Statistics Canada in 2001, there were 896,225 people who consider themselves as being South Asians. According to the 2001 UK Census there are 2.33 million British South Asians, making up 4% of the population of the United Kingdom.

An explosive cultural stand-off between the Government and Britain's Hindu community is looming in the formidable shape of a six-year-old black Friesian bull named Shambo. Hindus from around the country are threatening to form a human chain to prevent the slaughter of the animal, which they regard as sacred, after it tested positive for tuberculosis. Ramesh Kallidai, secretary-general of the Hindu Forum of Britain (HFB), which represents Hindus in the UK, said that killing a sacred temple cow or bull was considered to be "highly sacrilegious" and unacceptable. Hindus escalated their campaign to save a sacred bull from slaughter after it tested positive for tuberculosis, but faced an angry backlash from farmers.

Local farmers urged officials not to be swayed by pressure from the Hindu community. Eifion Huws, a dairy farmer, said: "The Welsh farming community should not be held to ransom by minority interests. "No-one, especially farmers, wants to see the slaughter of their animals"”but if there is one rule for us, there should be one rule for all." "TB is a highly contagious and dangerous disease and even if the animal in question is in isolation it still poses a risk. It is a disease that is transmissible to humans and other mammals, which means it has serious implications beyond the health of cattle. It must be slaughtered." Mr Walters, 56, has lost cattle himself to the disease and knows of farmers who have had as many as 100 animals slaughtered.

What about them? I have found good in every race and religion I have met and opened up to. It is so wrong to catagorize any nationality, race, culture, or religion. There will always be a bad apple in every barrel, but I have found life more nurishing looking for the good more than I have looking for the bad.

My problem with that is, if u want to implement NSEERS then u'll have to do it as a blanket policy. What about the illegal immigrants from the European countries, south and central America. What about the Mexicans?

I really do not see how you can speak so badly towards the Indians. I am a USC, born and raised here, and my best friend is Indian.

Open your minds to what they have to offer. They are very bright and intelligent people with good moral standings and very strong values. They are very hard working people and know how to enjoy life no matter what their hardship vs. Americans, Fat, lazy, and take advantage of others.

They have given us so much, now it is time we give back.

To all my Indian friends out there, I respect you so very much!

    India to expel US missionary

Mr Cooper denied infringing the Indian constitution
An American missionary attacked in southern India last week by right-wing Hindus has been told to leave the country in the next seven days.
Kerala state police said Joseph Cooper had violated his tourist visa by indulging in missionary activity.
Mr Cooper, 68, is still in a private hospital with stab wounds.
Police said Hindu nationalists had been planning to bring a court case based on visa rules.
    Ten arrests
A senior police official said: ''The court would have upheld the appeal and the police would have been left shame-faced.''

Attacks on Kerala Christians are rare
Mr Cooper, an ordained bishop of the New Jerusalem church from Pennsylvania, had been given seven days to leave because of his injuries.
Police have arrested 10 members of the hardline Hindu Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) over the attack.
The RSS, which denies involvement, has close ties to the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party that heads the federal coalition government.
The attack took place on the outskirts of the state capital, Trivandrum, on 13 January.
    Five more hurt
Eyewitnesses said Mr Cooper was surrounded by an armed gang of 10 people as he was returning from a gospel convention organised by the Protestant Friends of the Bible Church.

The gang reportedly attacked Mr Cooper and others with swords, sticks and iron bars.
A local pastor, his wife and two children and one other person were also injured.
Mr Cooper later said he had done nothing wrong under the Indian constitution.
He said he had participated in missionary meetings regularly during 11 visits to India.
About one-third of the population of Kerala is Christian and attacks of this kind are rare.
But local people told the BBC that in recent months some right-wing Hindu organisations had been protesting against religious minorities.

Hey guys I think the Indians should come forward and help the world and mankind by showing the ills of Islamic culture. Pakistan commited the bigest genocide by killing millions of Bangladehsi and never have they been brought to justice.
They are the biggest kanaving people they first denied that pakistani army was involved in kargil and when the world showed the proof they shamelesly agreed to their terrorist acts. They did not even claim their dead soldiers bodies. India at the least gave them a decent burial. If needed I can post the proof of it for you to see.
What a country never could even have a democracy like all moslem countries always breeds fanatics and harbors terrorist.
