Yes, one needs to have legal permanent residency to file for US citizenship.

Actually, if you were living in the UK, and just "visited" here, you have actually lost your LPR status. To maintain the LPR status you must have your unreliquished residence in the U.S. and spend at least six months physical presence in the U.S.

It is a common misperception that an LPR can come to the U.S. once or twice a year to "maintain" their status. Not true. You must acutally live here and have physical presence.

Any application for citizenship will expose the fact that you were living outside the U.S., which will result in you loosing your LPR status.

Unless you apply for citizenship in the Sacramento District of USCIS, which discourages its officers from finding fraud.

hi, i am a greencard holder ( 5 years )and want to apply for my citizenship i am presently spending a lot of my time in the uk on buisiness and only came back to the usa twice this last year to keep my green card active,

does anyone know if i have to stay in the usa peranently without leaving for a certain time before i can apply for citizenship? any help is appreciated, thanks
