  • Permanent resident / Dual Citizenship ?

Hi , i am sorry im not asking anything new , but this is so important to me i made a new topic for it.
I went to the USa 2 years ago and got married , got a lawyer and got evrything i needed. Right now i am a permanent u.s resident. But this coming november i was supposed to change my status to US citizen. Now the unfortunate thing happened that my wife and i chose to go our seperate ways. We did marry out of love , but things just got to the point where we grew apart from eachother. I went back to holland and she is still in the usa offcourse. (we have a 2 yr old daughter also) I was allowed to leave the country for such and such a long time and im still in the green with evrything there. but now here comes the thing. I want to file/ask for a Dual Citizenship , mainly because my family lives in holland and so i can go my whereabouts here when i want , but i also met someone recently in the usa , and i made a lot of great friends also there.. so i would love to be able to have my citizenship there. But is this still possible and what do i have to do? I am trying to get help from a lawyer , but the economy here is badle affected also , so it's a bit hard to come up with the right amount of $$$.
If anyone would help me then i am already very thankfull for that.

God bless you and God bless the USA

You can become US citizen while being citizen of another country. Often times, you can retain your old citizenship provided your home country does not prohibit that.

          To marlboroman :
As I have checked in your post you got married two years ago. If this is a situation then you are not elegible for citizenship yet. It has to be 3 years from the date when you became permanent resident. According to this time frame, you must have a conditional GC for two years and first of all you need to remove conditions on your GC by filing I-751.
In case conditions on your GC are not removed then you will lose your residency status. On the other hand, if you are divorced then you will need to complete 5 years to become U.S. Citizen.
          Good luck.

As long as your wife agree to help you that will be fine. If she agreed to help you wait until you get your citizenship, thats a very kind of her and of course easier for you, otherwise you have to wait another 5 years as Umesh said.

Hmmm....as far as I know whoever file the divorce, he / she the one to pay the fees. By the way each county and state have different law about this.

About the citizenship, I'm sorry I cannot answer that, hope someone else can answer you. I'm not a lawyer, act accordingly.

Ok i found out that ( i lost my perm res. card and all the papers , curse the day that they did got lost ) i can file for a new one and or papers. I also looked up that i need to go to the us embassy in order for a visum or not? I plan to go to the U.S. this year for a period of 3 weeks . Im still in the fog about (see topic). Maybe a lawyer will give me free advice? Reson why i am going back and forth is because my mothers medical conditon got worse and i am trying to help her out as much as possible (and i am visiting my girlfriend in the U.S that is)
