The Hill reports that Trump is now threatening to close the entire southern border using coronavirus as a pretext, even though there are more cases of the virus in the US alone than in all of Latin America, and far more in Europe and Asia, and the only US deaths to date are near the Canadian border, not the Mexican one. See:

This moves me to try to describe my reaction in verse, using the classical Japanese waka form (much older than haiku):

Donald Trump's ugly
Racism is clearer now
Than ever before
In the way he tries to use
The coronavirus threat

As a pretext for
Closing the border against
Latino migrants
While downplaying the same threat
From Europe and Asia

Once again we see
Trump's hatred for immigrants
From "shithole" countries
While making America
Into a whiter image

My original comment appears below:

In a shameful and dangerous distortion of the facts as they are known so far about the deadly coronavirus spread, Donald Trump adopted the failed initial strategy of the Chinese dictatorship by trying to play down the treat at a February 28 rally in South Carolina. At the rally, he called the threat posed by this lethal new virus, which some experts are already com[paring to a pandemic, by calling it the "New Hoax" and blaming immigrants at the border. This is despite for the threat despite that fact that there have have so far been only one or two cases in all of Latin America. There have so far been no cases at all along the Southern US border despite the barbaric and sadistic Trump-Miller "Remain in Mexico" policy.

This policy, incidentally, was struck down on the merits as contrary to US and international law by the 9th Circuit Federal Court of Appeals, before the Court cravenly reversed itself and allowed this racist policy to go ahead. See: reuters.com

Trump's 'Remain in Mexico' immigration policy allowed to proceed temporarily

According to another report which I have seen and am trying to access again in order to verify, the Trump administration argued before the 9th Circuit that the alleged danger of coronavirus being spread in the US by Mexican "cartels" and asylum seekers would endanger "national security", even though there have been only one or to cases in all of Mexico to date so far as i am aware.

For more about Trump's latest demagogic speech, see The Guardian, February 28

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/feb/28/trump-calls-coronavirus-outbreak-a hoax-and-links-it-to-immigration-at-rally

In Trump's words:

"(...the Democrat party of open borders is a direct threat to the health and wellbeing of all Americans."

The Guardian also reports that right wing neo-fascist politicians in Europe are blaming Middle Eastern and African immigrants for the spread of the virus even though there have so far been many more cases in Europe.and in the Middle East and Africa.

In addition to making the threat of this deadly virus part of his own racist anti-immigrant agenda, Trump seems to be following the authoritarian script of the Chinese Communist party leaders in trying to play down the coronavirus danger. Appointing Vice-President Pence, whose reaction to the spread of HIV in his state while governor was to call for more prayer, to "lead" the effort US to combat the virus is only one such example.

With regard to both public health and immigration, Trump's solution is essentially the same - more dictatorship.

To be continued in Part 2.
