Detention Overhaul

Los Angeles Times
reports "The Obama administration announced plans today to change
how immigration violators are detained in the U.S. by shifting
from a system that relies on a network of jails and private
prisons to one that is designed specifically for civil detention.
As part of the plan, which will take years to implement, U.S.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement will review its roughly 350
existing operating contracts and will increase oversight
throughout the system." We welcome this move.

(a) Dear Editor:
At Federalist Society meetings, the group is heavily peopled with
immigrants and their children. It seems we are more politically
diverse than native born attorneys. But groups like Numbers USA
have found an appeal that gets around the membership composition
which may interest readers of Immigration Daily. I've posted a
rebuttal on the Federalist Linked-In site, for whatever it is
Honza Prchal, Esq.                 Birmingham, AL

(b) Dear Editor:
A lawyer submitting an opinion letter in ID has an Esq. after
their name - but who are the other people who submit opinions? To
evaluate a letter, shouldn't we know who is the writer and from
where does their mindset come? Remember the person submitted ID
letters under the moniker R.L. Ranger? He now is gone, but recent
anti-immigrationist letters sound just like him/her. And for a
while, Ali Alexander letters, were rather moderate at times, but
we never discovered who he was, other than a Middle Eastern
naturalized citizen with Hispanic relatives. We recently
discovered Robert Yang is one of the "qualified individuals" for
whom he seeks permanent residence, because he is one of them. Jim
Roberts. Who is he and where are his opinions formed? His letters
support Mark Krikorian and CIS and lock horns with Roger Algase,
a dedicated lawyer, fighting injustice, championing civil rights,
distinguishing himself since before the passage of the Civil
Rights Act in 1964. Now we have the pen of Haydee Pavia (08/04/09
ID), South American born, whose letter with pull-up-the-ladder
mentality recommends fixing our government, rather than fixing
immigration because, "Our government is broken and it no longer
wants to enforce our laws, mostly immigration laws." VDARE
website, a hate monger group whose readers viciously attacked me
by email several years ago for my opinions supporting H-1B,
reports Haydee is a South American born "activist" with the
California Coalition for Immigration Reform, an immigration
restrictionist group that evidently hates Hispanics. (Not all
South Americans, and not all Mexicans, are "Hispanic") So, will
the US get any meaningful legal immigration reform in the next
four years? In my opinion no. Not while the atmosphere it is a
hotbed of bigotry, hate and politics. Let's move on with fresh

(c) Dear Editor:
I can see that what is happening is Ms Napolitano is an enforcer
of the law in Immigration and not deliver a better system for
those who are awaiting to be legalized.  In my opinion part of
the undocumented are families member of those who are citizen and
or Legal Permanent Resident who applied many months or years ago
and the system has been processing so slow for whatever category
the family member is.  So in reality I say from what I can deifer
the amount to be about 30 million half or maybe less than that
are undocumented with no chance to legalized unless a law is
created in immigration.  Can you imagine a person awaiting to be
legalized maybe 16 to 20 years after the I-130 was approved?
Gladys C Farris

(d) Dear Editor:
So many Americans  are forgetting that this is the US and we need
to enforce the laws. What is the reason we as Americans have to
"press 1 for English"?  In the US, English is our language.  In
the event we go to Mexico do you actually think they will treat
us with respect and have things in English for us?  Think not.
If they want to live in the US they need to learn the language
and become citizens and respect our flag and all that goes with
it.   Sheriff Joe does not tolerate any harassment  from anyone
and that is a good thing maybe more of the officials need to take
notice and apply some of his beliefs and get serious about
protecting the USA.     God bless the USA. Let's take back our
country and enforce the laws and remember we are the Americans
and English is the language
Cheryl Saienni

(e) Dear Editor:
Regarding ID comment (08/04/09 ID) Joe Arpaio is the best thing
that ever happened to this country.   Too bad we can't clone him
and put him in every city and state in the US.  He calls a spade
a spade and has the guts to treat criminals exactly as they
should be treated.  As he says, "if you don't like it, don't come
back!"  However, there are far too many jerks in the country that
won't take his advice.
