Six amendments and six votes to table. The seventh was Senator Baucus' amendment to scrap REAL ID and low and behold the motion to table fails and debate proceeds. So that's the end of debate for today. Tomorrow morning will be the key vote to end debate and 60 votes are needed. If that passes, the remaining amendments will be considered and a final vote on the bill would happen on late Friday.
If you ask me to lay odds, I'd say the cloture vote will pass in a squeaker - 62 votes is my prediction. We'll see how close I am.
UPDATE: Maybe I'm off if you believe reports that several Senators have changed their views in the last few hours. But this bill has been pronounced dead many times in the past so I wouldn't count it out yet.
I hope the democrates in the Senate can give and help ensure passage of at least border security in the next two years so then once that is in place we can finally get something regarding immigration. I hate to say this, but I don't think anything regarding immigration can pass untill these anti-immigrant senators can get their border security first.
I hate to do this, but I think all of us immigrants should get on the border security band wagon and ask our democrat senators such as Kennedy to secure our borders as soon as possible so we can finally, even after 2 years, get some relief and get real reform in immigration. What do you say guys, how does that sound?
