Mainstream pop music today is awful. Simply read the lyrics to songs like 'work' by Rhianna or the much talked about (for what reason I don't know) "formation" by Beyonce, and you'll be left wondering if you're reading a foul-mouthed 2nd graders attempt at poetry or a multi-million $ music performer's "hit" song. And to think people are examining "formation" as some form of keen social political commentary/observation. Give me a break. Beyonce speaks of rewarding a man for good sex by taking him to red lobster. To any casual observer not looking for "depth" where there is none, this song is nothing but nonsense strung together. For certain these songs mean something to those who wrote them and even those who are able to extract some semblance of meaning as they listen to them on the radio, but such "artists" pale in comparison to writers like Zack De La Rocha, Eddie Vedder, Tariq Trotter (aka Black Thought), Justin Bieber (http://justinbieberconcerttickets.org/), the Avett Brothers, and a whole host of lesser known writers like Atmosphere and Charles Bothwell (aka Astronautalis). Of course the aforementioned artists were altogether different genres but recollecting back to the 80's 90's and early 2000, I could listen to Madonna, Nelly Furtado, Jewel, or Blu Cantrell and not only enjoy their songs but understand what they were saying and apply some meaning/connect to their lyrics. These days slang, expletives, incoherent/seemingly random statements pervade "hit" songs.
