As we approach tomorrow's Super Bowl in Phoenix tomorrow, the Wall Street Journal reports on Arizona's growing reputation as the most immigrant unfriendly state in the country. While there business license and English-only laws may now only be seen as part of a larger trend, the latest effort to pass a law barring birth certificates to children born to out of status parents is the jaw dropping clincher. The rule is stunningly unconstitutional. There are progressive thinkers in Arizona. It is, after all, the state that brought us Senator John McCain, the pro-immigration Republican presidential candidate who is now the front runner for the GOP nomination. And Governor Janet Napolitano, often touted as a potential Democratic vice presidential choice, has done her best to temper down the rhetoric and stop even harsher legislation from passing. Nevertheless, the damage to Arizona's reputation and, soon, its economy is really unfortunate for the people of that great state.
