Schaal The second of three immigrants on the the Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology is German-born Barbara Schaal. Professor Schaal teaches biology at Washington University in St. Louis and is the first woman to ever hold the position of Vice President of the National Academy of Sciences. Schaal's field is plant genetics and she has done a great deal of research in to evolutionary processes and plant species.
