Comment: House Republicans Get Religion
After refusing to join the Senate in overhauling immigration policy, House Republicans have come around to the view that perhaps a change in immigration policy is needed after all. In responding to child refugees from Central America showing up on our border, House Republicans appear to think that changes to the INA are needed, not just funds the President asked for to deal with refugees. Naturally, the changes House Republicans seek involve making it harder for immigrants to stay in America (in this case the immigrants are child refugees). That's a game two can play. We encourage Democrats in the House and both parties in the Senate to agree with House Republicans on the need for policy change. The simplest way to proceed would be to attach the entire Senate CIR bill to the House's bill, so that all needed policy changes can be acted upon in one stroke. House Republicans' hypocrisy would be speedily exposed as that bill then dies. What will remain is the $4 billion that the President needs to take care of the child refugees. The answer is obvious - use creative and energetic re-programming as much as possible to shut down unnecessary enforcement activity - at CBP, ICE, TSA, and elsewhere - and divert those funds toward the child refugees. Even if this were unconstitutional, House Republicans will only file lawsuits, they appear incapable of passing reasonable bills on immigration, and appear to think that even impeachment is not the House's duty if it does not have enough time. Faced with a supine House, President Obama has no alternative but to incite it into action. Child refugees are a political winner for the President, since the Republicans are deeply split over immigration. He should ensure that House Republicans are held accountable for their deliberate inaction on CIR, one way or another. Please let us know your thoughts by writing to us at editor@ilw.com
