Comment: Immigration Transforming Texas
According to a CBS article, America's Voice, a pro-immigration group, has reported that the changing demographics in Texas are affecting the shape of Texas politics, especially the debate over immigration reform. The report states that 34% of Hispanic voters in Texas ranked immigration reform as the most important issue. A significant factor voters feel thusly is the emotional proximity of the voters to undocumented individuals; Clarissa Martinez with the National Council of La Raza notes, "We [voters] are tied to the immigrant community - they are our friends, our neighbors, our family - and the majority of voters know someone who is undocumented, so they know firsthand what Congressional inaction on this issue means for this community." The GOP, therefore, is scrutinized heavily by not only the 34% of Hispanic voters in Texas, but also the entire Latino population of Texas - a whopping 10 million - by their standstill stance on immigration reform. If they do not act efficiently, the party will certainly face negative consequences. If you have any comments or questions, please write to
