Comment: ICE In Action or ICE Inaction?
Jose Antonio Vargas, the former Washington Post reporter who announced he had been illegally present in the U.S. in 2011, was detained by ICE last Friday night. After being questioned by ICE agents, Mr. Vargas was released without an NTA. ICE believes they were following the Obama Administration's guidance to focus only on enforcement of immigration policies against dangerous individuals and those convicted of crimes. Mr. Vargas, who at 31 is too old to qualify for DACA, was stopped for driving with headphones on and it turned out that his driver's license was suspended; he will still face that charge. The full article can be read here. The actions of both Mr. Vargas and the Obama administration were criticized loudly by House Republican Elton Gallegly, whose comments can be read here. Mr. Gallegly comments were the usual that we have come to expect from Washington - lots of crowing about our broken immigration policies, but no real action, solutions, or willingness to work on real, plausible solutions. When will our government take action? How should ICE be dealing with situations like this one, which are completely foreseeable and inevitable? All parties acknowledge grievous shortcomings, but no one will take the first step. As always, we welcome your comments: editor@ilw.com.

Classes offered both online and in-person. Master the complex and ever changing maze of immigration policies and regulations with the Immigration Law Studies Certificate Program offered by CUNY's School of Professional Studies. It is designed for individuals working in law firms, companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations where they interact with immigrants and immigrant legal concerns on a regular basis and would therefore benefit from greater knowledge of the laws and regulations surrounding immigration.
