Comment: Don't Say 'Immigration'
Despite neither President Obama nor Mr. Romney mentioning the word 'immigration' over the course of a 90 minute debate, it remains an important topic on the minds of voters, particularly those in a number of key swing states like Colorado. This article hits on a number of key immigration themes for voters. The Hispanic population has grown by 45% in the past decade and, in a contested state like Colorado, that demographic shift makes a major difference. Many in that community are seeking a candidate who will adequately address the problems with the current state of our immigration system. Similarly, a business owner who had problems hiring agricultural workers was looking for a candidate who could offer real solutions on immigration that would allow him to continue staffing his company; without that, he risks going out of business every season. He has similarly been left looking for the appropriate candidate, stating, "I saw a poll that said half of Americans are not excited about either one of the candidates. I'll put myself in that category." The article closed by saying that the business owner, Steve Steele, would be looking for words on immigration policy from both candidates during last night's debate. He was surely disappointed. When will the candidates realize that immigration policy is a key issue to both individuals and American businesses that must be adequately addressed, both in policy and in discussions before the election?
