Comment: Last Second Victory - Lauren Gray, the British-born daughter of a couple who gained citizenship through the E-2 visa category, was just weeks away from being forced to leave the country until DHS granted her a two year reprieve only after Senator Claire McCaskill steeped in and personally contacted Janet Napolitano. Ms. Gray is about to turn 21 and was not able to extend her visa. She graduated from an American university and, like many recent graduates, is currently seeking her first post-graduate job. Ms. Gray had been seeking a visa for more than nine years, but was never able to get one because of visa backlogs. Of course, Ms. Gray's solution is just a temporary one - it grants her only two years of relief. In addition, her younger sister, now 18, will encounter the same situation in just a few years as well. Illogical and inconsistent outcomes are the hallmark of broken policy. While we laud the attempts by DHS to deliver solutions to real problems, like the one face by Ms. Gray and, indeed, the one faced by all applicants for Deferred Action, the solutions are temporary and speak to the need for comprehensive immigration reform. Our system is broken and needs stitches - not an increasing series of band-aids. What can we do? Share your thoughts with us editor@ilw.com and read the full article here.
