A# means Alien Registration Number, it is a specific number assigned to each green card holder when s/he enters the U.S. In fact it is the actual number of the green card.

A# is an individual number allotted by Immigration Department to a person who applies for Immigration benefits after entering the United States. This is a permanent number assigned to an individual and with this number Immigration Department dug out the information about that indivisual.
