Thread: sponsors

What is a sponsor? If I sponsor my ESL students,
    am I liable for anything?
I am a Laubach way to reading and English tutor.
For twenty years I have taught people to read in English. But I know very little about immigration. The more I read, the less I know.
I have made phone calls for my students, but I am more confused now than before.
No one seems to help Chinese people. Spanish speaking people have help.
Please help me help my students. Thank you.

As far as I know, you can sponsor your students if you would like, however that may change somewhat according to their individual circumstances.

I would recommend doing so only to people that you completely trust however as you will be financially responsible for them (to some degree) for I think it is 10 years or when they become a citizen, whichever comes first.

I am afraid that I am not completely aware of all the details, but the law will pertain equally to hispanic, chinese, arab, etc.

You may want to ask about or consider specifics, such as if they are unemployed, amount a large amount of credit, wish to declare bankruptcy, become sick and unable to work, do not earn sufficient money to support themselves, and whether or not any portion of your savings would be held in trust rather than distributed to your own family if you should pass away during the period in which you are sponsoring the person.

I am not at all discouraging you, but rather suggesting that you do make an appointment with an attorney or call the INS (at least 5 times) and are sure that you completely trust and have faith in the person that you have chosen to sponsor.

You also might want to consider the possibility of being a co-sponsor if there is someone else that is closer to the person (family member?) that would be willing to sponsor them, but doesn't earn enough money.

Good Luck. We need more people with kind hearts like yours out there!
