Thread: Discussion Board Moderation

  1. #1
    Dear Discussion Board Visitors,

We have been operating this discussion board since 1999. We had a major
technology upgrade for this discussion board in mid-1002. Before late 2002,
complaints about this board were very, very few, and abuse (as defined by
our Disclaimer below) on this board was also very rare. However, in recent
months, we have had many complaints, and have noticed much abuse. Most of
the abuse has to do with foul language, with off-topic discussions, and
excessive cross-posting. We believe this abuse is found among both the
pro-immigration posters and the anti-immigration posters on our board.
Blocking IP addresses is not an effective tool to block abusers anymore
because of dynamic IP addressing that is prevalent today. So, we are left
with two choices - aggressive moderation or registration, and possibly
both - to stop abuse of our discussion board. Each of these has drawbacks -
moderation consumes enormous time which our small company cannot afford,
and registration may lead to significant drop in traffic to this board.
However, it appears that we will have to go forward with one or both of
these in the near future. We are committed to preserving a discussion forum
where participants can present their differing viewpoints, but without
abusing our posting policy described in our Disclaimer below.

We would like to remind all of you our Discussion Board Disclaimer:

Nothing included in these pages should be construed as creating an
attorney-client relationship between participants in these discussions and
ILW.COM (and/or attorneys who post on this site), nor should anything in
these discussions be deemed the provision of legal advice or a legal
opinion. Participation in the discussion contained herein is not
confidential or privileged and any material submitted or comments made
should not be deemed to be confidential or privileged. Users of ILW.COM's
discussion board rely on information on the page at their own risk. The
information on the site is not intended to substitute for a consultation
with a lawyer. Please use common courtesy, and refrain from using foul
language. Posters of inappropriate messages will be barred from the
    discussion board.

Please be aware that those messages containing foul language or discussing
issues not related to immigration matters will be deleted despite the rest
of the text or subject. Also note that if the topic starter message is
deleted, all the responses to it will be automatically deleted.

We are working to improve our discussion board, and even though we are
trying hard, we cannot go through every single message posted. Please be
patient and help us construct a very friendly and useful immigration forum.

    Sincerely,
    Webmaster, ILW.COM

IMO, Registration is a must to prevent the abuse thats currently going on. It'll consume less resources than constant moderation, and can identify problem poster and block them for good (even dynamic ip use by AOL and such has a block range assigned to each area, which can be easily identified).

Thank you for noticing and responding to us. Hopefully this board can return to its intended use in discussing immigration related issues.

ilw moderator, you keep on saying that you're controlling the board to erase the bad lines, but if you'll do a search you'll see(which you already know) that there's A LOT of abusive language there that YOU PREFER NOT TO ERASE.
you just erase the ones you feel like.
    Dishonesty is a shame!
