Comment: Red Herring

Senator Grassley or someone on his staff is trying to create trouble with reauthorization of the EB-5 Regional Center program, by alleging that there were security lapses. The media has been duped into running spurious stories such as this one.

Some observations about the nonsense from Mr. Grassley's staff:

  • As a practical matter, reauthorization of three programs have been combined together for more than a decade: EB-5 Regional Center program, Conrad-30 waiver and E-Verify, i.e. two benefit programs and one enforcement program. This combination has proved resilient and has generated overwhelming bipartisan support averaging of 98% majorities on the floors over multiple votes in multiple Congresses.

  • No one is against security. There are a number of statutes already on the books to achieve security. No one is even suggesting eliminating security checks to block nefarious individuals from our shores. Security is being used here as a red herring and as a fig leaf for immigration obstruction. DHS has been pursuing security if anything too aggressively.

  • Earth calling Mr. Grassley and his staff: In any group of 10,000 people to find 1 or 2 bad characters is only natural. To damn the 9,998 individuals for 2 bad apples is idiotic and unconscionable. Security checks and law enforcement resources are properly focused on screening all immigrants for any evidence of wrong-doing, and everyone supports this.

To use purported "security concerns" to attack one of the best examples of a win-win-win immigration program, while blatantly ignoring the above is outside reasonable discourse. We call upon the supporters of the EB-5 program such as Senator Schumer to call out Senator Grassley and his staff for thinly veiled racism masquerading as a security concern or an immigration position. We also urge those in the Republican party who are pro-immigration, like Senator Rubio and Jeb Bush, to distance themselves from the likes of Senator Grassley by denouncing his eggregious attacks on immigration. Mr. Grassley is simply offering NO - NO - NO as if it were an immigration policy - this is a disservice to the Republican Party and if Mr. Grassley and his staff are not stopped, the eventual 2016 Republican nominee will once again be bereft of any positive message on immigration. If Republican Party elder-statesmen are okay with remaining locked out of the White House for another 4 years after 2016, then Mr. Grassley is a great immigration spokesperson - otherwise, the Republican Party would be well advised to silence the idiots in its ranks on the immigration issue.
