Comment: Obama Back

With a huge Republican tidal wave crashing on American shores yesterday, sweeping the Grand Ole Party into victories in the Senate, the House, and Governorships throughout the land, here's what the immigration landscape looks like. Soon to be Senate Majority Leader McConnell suggested yesterday that a compromise on immigration was possible in the next Congress. We don't believe it. With solid control over Congress, Republicans look well-positioned to pass border security legislation throwing more dollars at America's most out of control agency - CBP putting the kibosh on any claims to fiscal sanity the GOP may have. The filibuster has not yet been entirely abolished, so perhaps sanity may prevail in the Senate on immigration legislation, permitting Democrats to stymie, to some extent, lunatic bills soon to issue from the Republican House on immigration matters. Notwithstanding the knee-capping delivered to Tea Party insurgents by the GOP establishment in primary after primary earlier this year, Republicans remain in thrall to the extremists of their party on immigration matters, witness the repudiation of DACA in H.R. 5230 on August 1, 2014. With Republican leaders such as Speaker Boehner insisting that sins of parents should be visited on children, in defiance of American tradition and common law over the centuries, reasonable compromise with the GOP on immigration is not possible. When Republicans publicly, loudly, and repeatedly, rebuke those like Mr. Tancredo and Mr. Sensenbrenner who have relentlessly demonized hard working immigrants, we are prepared to be persuaded that the Republican Party has indeed turned a new leaf. Until then, the evidence compels any reasonable observer to the conclusion that Republicans are the "deport-'em-all" party, and untrustworthy partners in immigration negotiations. We urge President Obama to ignore Republican leaders on immigration issues, and to GO BIG on executive action to deliver some immigration relief, no matter how fleeting, to millions upon millions of suffering Americans. We remind Mr. Obama that he has a chance for the history books on immigration to be ever remembered as compassionate toward immigrants, unlike the heartless Party. We have your back, Mr. President, use your pen.
