First Poison Pill Fails in Senate

Yesterday, Senator Chuck Grassley argued to amend the S.744 triggers to postpone the initial RPI legalization phase until border security is achieved. That was obviously going to be unacceptable to Democrats. Five Republicans (the four in the Gang of Eight as well as Alaska's Lisa Murkowski) joined 52 Democrats in defeating the Grassley proposal. West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin voted with the rest of the Republicans. There have now been 103 amendments published on Thomas. There was a kerfuffle between Majority Leader Reid and Senator Grassley over Reid's decision to require a 60 vote majority for amendments. That's likely to kill most of the poison pill amendments. It will also likely mean that liberal amendments on issues like guns and rights for LGBT individuals will also fail.

The other news of the day yesterday that's worth noting is that House Republicans will have a meeting on immigration on July 10th. That seems to be a little later than makes sense if the goal is to get legislation through the Judiciary Committee and done on the House floor by the end of the month. But we shall see.
