Thread: Mexico deports American illegal alien criminals

  1. #1
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/3650444.stm

Mexico has shut down three centres for young people with behavioural or drug problems and ordered the deportation of nearly 600 American teenagers.
Officials inspected the centres in the northern towns of Ensenada and Rosarito after complaints of mistreatment.

They found many of the youths had come into Mexico as tourists, not residents of treatment programmes, reports say.

A spokesman for the school which lost 538 pupils told the BBC he was bemused by the Mexican government's decision.

These are not bad kids - they are just kids who struggle... at school

    Ken Kay, school spokesman

Ken Kay of Casa by the Sea in Ensenada said one theory on the deportations was that Mexico wanted to "get even" with the US, who sends "illegal (Mexican) aliens and some criminals" back to Mexico.

And Mr Kay defended the school's programmes, which he said allowed the teenagers to "get their life back in order".

Most of the teenagers being repatriated from the schools in Mexico belonged to families in California and Arizona, reports say.

A US consulate spokesman told the Associated Press that she expected that all the teenagers would be back in the US by the end of Sunday.
