    Michael,
    America did NOT win in real terms.

    Did you see the opening ceremony? There were like 600 Americans in the team, and some of those top teams like China had like 150 people.

    Do the math.

    Picture this:
    USA had 35 gold medals out of almost 600 players it sent to the olympics in total;

    China had 32 gold medals and it sent about 160 competitors.

    Just be honest and say who is the stronger team.

    Money buy many things. When a country has money to invest in sport, it will produce Olympic medals. You have to understand that US players have many advantages like a high tech custom design bathing suit that will save your those 3 seconds you need to win a swinning race.

    So first, you have the fact that all your ïnstruments are the best of the best. They, the athelts had accessed to professionals that can monitor their performance (doctors, engineers, etc). Finally, athelts dont have to worry about money. Goverment pays them to practice their sport plus they have juicy contracts for advertisement.

    You can not compared that situatuatuion with the one that thrid-world countries have. There usually an athetle has to study, work and train at the same time. They just run with buy-in-the-store 60-dollar Nike shoes. When they bring a medal to their countries they are wolcomed as national heros. It's an honor. They are happy to be in the Olimpcs even though they know there have no chance of wining anything.

    There is a big difference. Many athelts want the medal for their countries. Many atlhets of the US do it for the money (adversiment points that a medal will mean). Usually a medal wont mean money for a thrid-world player so it just the plain feeling of making everybody listen your national athem.

    PS: Half of the US medals were in Swimming and Athletims, sports which give the most amount of medals by far. China had diversity in their sports. It's a fact that Chinese (oriental people in general) are very dedicated and very demanding to theirselves. I am sure they will get more medals next Olympic games.

    Calm down. There are countries who won significantly more medals per million of their inhabitants. USA only wins a fatty contest when it comes to awards per populations.

    I had hopes for the American basketball team. I watched Argentina play and was just amazed. The NBA needs to rethink its strategy. Players getting too much $$ and not keeping up the skills. Look at these players from Lithuania/Argentina, they make nothing big compared to the Iverson or the James but still performed well.

    So the salary of professional sport people should be re-evaluated. They can be good for the USA but not sufficient against foreign. I'm talking about sports where the US was good but failed.

    Just my 2 cents
