Thread: Question on Marriage

  1. #1
When I was 18, I did a stupid thing and got married to a friend of mine so he could retain his visa. At the time - I admit I was 18 & stupid.
I realized my mistake immediatly after the ceremony (literally - RIGHT AFTER) and basically ran away from the situation. We never lived together - nor I'm sure could he prove to INS we had a valid marriage. **** - I've never heard from him since.

I heard a few months after our "marriage" he got deported from some people we both knew. Nope - don't knoow where they are now. (I dont know what kind of VISA he had to be here in the states)

If he got deported - is the marriage still legal & valid? Will I need to file for divorce? What kind of attorney should I retain?

I'm 34 now and I want to get married in 2007 to the man I have been dating & have a child with.

Yes you will need to get a divorce. What state are you in? Some states have time requirements of seperation. check the stats and you can apply to have marriage dissolved based on seperation time. or you can opt to try for an annulment since marriage was never consumated.
