    REMEMBER THAT ILLEGALS ARE SUING THEIR EMPLOYERS IN RECORD NUMBERS. IF THEY TRY TO COLLECT UNEMPLOYMENT OR WORKMENS COMP AND CAN'T GET IT, THEY REPORT THEIR EMPLOYERS AND SUE.

    Workplace fraud is a growing problem involving employers that fail to properly classify workers as "employees," even when those workers legally should be classified as "employees". This business practice allows them to undercut competitors who play by the rules, deny workers critical workplace protections only guaranteed to employees and deprive taxpayers of critical dollars. The Hiring of Illegals is illegal and punishable with fines as high as $3000 per alien and/or jail time.
    Recognizing the impact workplace fraud has on workers, law abiding employers and taxpayers, Governor O'Malley introduced and the General Assembly approved the Workplace Fraud Act of 2009 to crack down on the practice. The new law will take effect October 1, 2009. Regulations will be drafted, and DLLR will convene a working group to provide input during that process.

    Then these companies would just be encouraged further to offshore their operations, and therefore, outsource jobs to China, India, etc. where labor is cheap and in turn rake in more profits. These companies own the jobs anyway, not the government, not the US workers.

    Or they may just totally uproot their businesses from US soil and invest in a lot friendlier economies. When in fact there are a lot out there. Castigate the business sector. Propose punitive laws that take backward steps and run counter to globalization trends. It's a no-win atmosphere for America's ability to compete in the global market.

    Wrong move.

    Indeed, high labor costs have definitely contributed to GM's downfall. It's the union leadership's abusive demands and collective bargaining practices on one hand and the GM management's lack of muscle (despite their potbelly paychecks and skyrocket bonuses and incentives) for giving in to labor's demands for lifetime benefits even for both current and retired members on the other - most of the time. You can call it a sense of entitlement if you will.

    But these unionized whims and caprices by the labor force are purely homogeneous and homegrown. I mean, there's no any thumbprints by immigrants traceable.

    Just like how AFL-CIO voices its recent opposition to the guest-worker program concept (coincidentally one of the centerpieces of CIR) in a head-on collision with that of the US Chamber of Commerce that espouses it.

    It's a death knell, so to speak, for CIR's march to victory anytime soon because both of these organizations are supposedly strong push for CIR champions.

    Add to GM's downfall the rising, somewhat astute and forward-looking, competitions in the car market induced by Asian car manufacturers. Ever sensitive to things and times to come, that dependence on fossil fuel would one day be unpractical, Asian car executives shifted to hybrid car innovations while GM and others engaged in multi-branding to huge and gas guzzling SUVs (status symbol of American invincibility). While these GM, etc. executives were in banquettes in Malibu or in Carribean cruises to formulate erroneous plans and strategies again and again, soon enough oil prices went sky high.

    Add to this that Toyota, etc. cars are much-much cheaper (smaller yet more dependable, and user-friendlier) to manufacture by workers whose retirement and health funds are being set aside by their companies from their own earnings, from where they draw as needs arise, if they abuse them, then they exhaust their own money sooner so they don't.

    Then fast forward to the last quarter of 2008 when the first signs of the US economy collapsing appeared. Banks froze credits for GM as well as making it hard for car buyers to qualify for loans. Ok, those few who qualified naturally opted to buy smaller and more economical car models instead of GM's depreciated inventory of fuel guzzlers.

    The prospect to export them overseas likewise became dim because the economic meltdown had a ripple effect worldwide.

    Then came the government's bailout funds. Then a big chunk went to GM executive's greedy pockets in the form of incentives and rewards for making 'intelligent' decisions for a giant down to its demise.

    Bailing out or rescuing the economy from the dump "without" cost is wrong mathematics.

    Fiscal responsibility is a very respectable and ideal phrase, but those who readily mouth the same should also be willing to achieve that goal. But in almost every step of the way, the party of 'no' proves to want to achieve nothing but the current administration to fail.
