Thread: Gotta stop studying if married under visa F1?

    Hi all,

I will be doing my masters in the US under a F1 visa valid for about 2 years starting January 2009. But my US citizen boyfriend and I have planned to marry during my first semester (April 2009).

    My question is:
Will I have to stop studying in order to undergo the whole process of "adjusting status" and applying for permanent residency and green card?

I know you can't start working right after marrying because you start this whole process (unless you apply for a work authorization). But my main concern is not to have to stop studying while all that process takes place.
    Is that possible?

Thank you lots and lots for any information or opinion you can share with me!

Are you with this USC for a green card??

You do not need to stop studying.

However, please keep in mind that while your case is pending, you will have to apply for Advance Parole every time if you need a trip outside US.

Tak! Thanks a lot for your comment.

We have been together for 4 years. But it is no longer possible for him to come and go to Peru, where I live. He has to finish his degree and I have to start my masters that why we decided to move to US.

Dear Tak, are you sure I can keep my student status and attend classes regularly while the whole process of change of status, residency application and green card takes place?

I don´t pretend to give the green card any real use soon. I will be too busy getting my degree. At the most, I will be working as Student Assistant for the university I will be enrolled (on my F1 visa).

The posting makes it sound like they met four months ago like she is looking for the green card and willing to disregard the student visa. You keep studying and maintain legal status it is self explanitory
