    1. COMMENT

    Hi******* The Reagan Legacy

Rep. Tom Tancredo tried to expand from his anti-immigration base
by portraying himself as a "common sense Reagan conservative,"
when he announced plans for an exploratory bid for the
Republican nomination for president in 2008. To Ronald Reagan,
immigration was a vital part of his vision of America as "a
shining city upon a Hill," and a vital proof that America
remained a land of opportunity. When he signed the Immigration
Reform and Control Act in 1986 that legalized 2.7 million
undocumented immigrants, he declared, "We have consistently
supported a legalization program which is both generous to the
alien and fair to the countless thousands of people throughout
the world who seek legally to come to America. The legalization
provisions in this act will go far to improve the lives of a
class of individuals who now must hide in the shadows, without
access to many of the benefits of a free and open society. Very
soon many of these men and women will be able to step into the
sunlight and, ultimately, if they choose, they may become
Americans." Has Rep. Tancredo seen common sense and changed his
mind on immigration, or is this merely a cynical attempt to
hijack a legacy for political gains?

    6. LETTERS

    (a) Dear Weekly Editor:
I agree with Sabrina Panjwani 100%. I'm certain there are many
immigrants "dying" to become a citizen and will be more than
ecstatic to jump at the offer to join the military. They will
most likely be placed in the most dangerous zones and many will
"die" because of trying to become a U.S. citizen. This just goes
to show that the U.S. has used these people for many years and
still doing so. Not only are their presence an advantage to
lining the pockets of companies but, whew, now the U.S.
government is trying to find a way to legally "use" them. The
media speaks of the border deaths and in the future I guess we'll
hear the statistics on how many will die in our military from
"dying to be a U.S. citizen." Think they're going to give any
purple hearts to them? Or will critics say they aren't
deserving because they weren't a U.S. citizen in the first place?
If I wanted to be a citizen, yes, I'd most likely join our
military and hope that if I die in service that maybe my
immediate family will be taken care of. Doubtful though.

    (b) Dear Weekly Editor:
I found Sherry Arciniega's update (IW 01/02/2007) very
interesting. I'm sorry I missed her previous posting. She said
in her comment that they devote themselves to assisting others
with similar problems. I'd like to e-mail Sherry or have her do
so first to me if she so wishes. I don't know how to go about
this. I sent an inquiry to Webmaster so hopefully I'll get some
advise on how we might contact each other.

    Hi******* The Reagan Legacy

Rep. Tom Tancredo tried to expand from his anti-immigration base
by portraying himself as a "common sense Reagan conservative,"
when he announced plans for an exploratory bid for the
