Thread: How can I withdraw my case with the lawyer?

  1. #1
    Happy New Year to everyone!

I went to a law firm recommended by a friend in NYC near last month and have them to prepare permanent residence application, and we agree for $1500 in fees. I handed them all *printed* documentations with chronically order, however, the work quality is unbelievable lousy, full of typo and mistakes.
The question is, I sincerely don't think they deserve a dime on this case, (to be fair, they did good work on my friend's case) cause it took me more time to review their mistakes then doing it myself. It just completely misses the point of hiring them and I simply can't work with people I have no confidence with.
What I should do? Do I need to hire another lawyer? Or I have to go back and fight with them? Where I can post information for these terrible experiences? Is notifying bar association a right and effective way to do?

    Thanks for advices.

do u have contract with them? try pointing out there mistakes and inefficency, you may have to pay a little amount and fired him , get another attorney.
If he didnot correct his mistake, then complaint to bar association. you are in NY and there is certain procedure to complaint against attorney to bar association, be careful when filing complaint to ethic comette..You have to pay little fees to file complaint, I think its $50. don't waive your right in any case. you want your money from him not from the insurance or Bar Fund he carry come back here and I will explain you all nuts and bolts including Office of the bar counsel in VA. remember you have to file two complaint , one to get your money and another complaint against attorney.
Its a discussion, not a legal advise..

Actually, I disagree here. First attempt to bring the errors to the attention of the attorney's office. Indeed, they should correct them at no additional charge to you. However, in order to have a good claim to have your entire retainer refunded, you would need to undertake to prove that "nothing" was delivered. Though errors are annoying and time consuming, I think you'd have a hard time getting relief.

You made such a good point Swiss. Unifosa if you are disappointed, try and bring your complaints to the Law firm. If they dont rectify itor refuse to do so, then you can file a grievance against them. You have to give them the chance to remedey their mistakes. It just typographic errors, as long as it is rectified before the forms are filed with the INS. Good luck .
