Thread: NATIONAL DELAY IN CITIZENSHIP OATH CEREMONY

Just when you thought you'd heard all that could possibly go wrong regarding INS bungles and terrorists, The New York Times recently reported the suspension of five INS employees after a man suspected of having ties to the Islamic radical group Hezbollah was able to become a naturalized U.S. citizen. After word leaked to the press, the INS spoke to the press, advising that an internal review had been initiated to determine exactly how things had unfolded. Apparently five employees of the INS based in New York and Newark, including the senior officer in charge of investigations of New York and the supervisor who oversees terrorism cases, were placed on paid administrative leave according to several INS officials who spoke to The New York Times on the condition of anonymity. The New York Times reported the preceding on November 14.

CNN followed up with INS Washington and got spokeswoman Nancy Cohen to go on the record, confirming that an agency review involving INS offices in New York and Newark, New Jersey, was indeed underway and that "several employees had been placed on paid leave."

According to the CNN.com article, the individual was under scrutiny by the FBI-New York Police Department Joint Terrorist Task Force because of suspected ties to Hezbollah. (The New York Times had reported the same thing.)

So, how did this happen? Some giant conspiracy theory? Payola's all around? No doubt conspiracy theories are running amok, but I suspect that it all boils down to the same old story: a colossal bureaucracy, an overwhelmed and inefficient bureaucratic mechanism, and a system that just plain doesn't jibe with the free and open society in which we live. It's not that we can't create a method of ensuring control of our borders and of who obtains temporary or permanent residency in this nation, it's just that we are going about it all wrong. Simply adding layer of bureaucracy upon layer of bureaucracy does not produce the desired result. If you have a recipe for a soup that doesn't taste good, you can't make the soup tastier by adding more stuff to it. You have to start with a new soup recipe, from scratch, and get it right from the beginning.

You will recall that in the days that followed September 11, the collective national call for the proverbial "head" of INS was nearly universal: the public, Congress,... the entire world wanted to decapitate the federal agency responsible for immigration. It was as if men and women of the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service had personally invited Osama bin Laden to organize the terrorism efforts against America and had all but flown the airplanes into Washington and New York. So desperate were we as a nation to dull our pain that the sacrificial lamb most convenient was spared all rational examination of the underlying causes: ranging from our global insensitivity to complex issues most Americans refuse to take the time to examine and consider objectively to an American Congress which has been historically underfunded and has shackled enforcement authority over those tasked with proper immigration rule-making.

We don't know anything about this particular investigation ,but I suspect that we have another group of employees who may have goofed a little but who are being held to the highest standards as sacrificial post-September-11 lambs. I feel for them and their families, because, as Yogi Berra said, "It feels like deja vu all over again"...

Here are the REAL questions for investigators to be asking:

"Exactly WHAT did the FBI-New York Police Department Joint Terrorist Task Force share with the INS New York before all of this occurred?"

My money is on "not a whole heck of a lot..."

Thank you for the informative article. I have read several similar articles in recent days. Our country is at war and Americans are worried. Our military personnel are risking their lives and their families are worried. Our borders are not secure and all citizens are worried. There is so much fraud and deception with false IDs, including passports, birth cert's, SSNs, D/Ls, and the list goes on, that everyone is worried.

It's time to place the protection of our sovereignty and our citizens first by serious detailed background checks of anyone who is not a citizen or who may not be who he claims to be.
