Thread: How much responsiblity does one has by signing Affidavit of Support

  1. #1
I just wanted to know. If a person signs an Affidavit of Support, when does this Affidavit expires? I heard after the person becomes a USC. Is that true?

My other question is on how much responsibility does one has by signing this paper. For instance if that person for whom the support is signed, becomes ill and doesn't have insurance, does the person who signed support responsible for his/her medical bills?

    Just curious.

    link for you http://www.hud.gov/offices/cpd/libra...ge/summary.cfm

until the immigrant earns 40 quarters of work (10 yrs) or becomes a citizen. If the immigrant needs any public based welfare (cash/medical), your obligation once signing the affidavit of support is that the govt can seek reimbursement from you.

    Thank you, Julie.

What if the person you sign affidavit for has lived in the US previously and worked approx. 7 years, filed taxes, etc. Would they have to work 3 more years for you to be clear of affidavit or start all over?

I believe the affidavit/clock starts ticking once the sponser signs it. It wouldnt be that the previously earned years of work is credited off. This is only my opinion. Maybe you can find the answer in the link I posted above.
