INS officers always ask at the port of entry how long a permanent resident been away from the states. Why do they do that? Are they just testing you to see if you would lie or do they really not know?? A permanent resident does not have to turn that I-94 (or whatever form) as he leaves the US so how can INS know how long one has been gone. Does one have to tell them the true length of the trip?
