  • Permanent residency expired

I have a question....... I am a permanent resident, well WAS my Green card expired in june, I don't know if I can still renew it or if I'm going to have problems with the INS because of this. I'm engaged to a citizen and I don't know if I should/ can renew it, or just get the papers from my fiance. I also want to know how long it would take for my status to become legal again.

I hope you are refering only to your card expiration only, and not termination of permanent GC based on something else. You can renew it by filing the renewal form at the local INS office near you. Visit INS web page and get the info.

      Hope this would help.

I asked about this for a coworker. According to the INS agent permanent resident status cannot be revoked unless a crime is committed and the person is deported or incarcerated. I'm sure there are other reasons but she didn't give me any more info. Just apply to renew the card. Don't wait, though, I'm sure there is a time limit!
