  • Sunday I begin the journey of sponsoring a High School Senior from Ecuador

Well I'll let you know how this works. Wish me well. I called to make an inquiry on Tuesday and Sunday Nov 1, 2009, the student arrives on his J-1 visa.

    Wish us luck!

Good luck, Robin. It's very kind of you to open your home for a foreign student to experience life in America.

I have met lots of Equadorians during WWI.
They told me a lot about Dr. Perl.

Your next post will be about how you can can sponsor said student for permanent residency...because it would supposedly be cruel to send him home to Ecuador.

Yes, very serious and he arrives Sunday at 10:25 a.m. at BWI.

I will keep everyone posted. I think it will be a good experience for everyone involved.

I only wish I spoke a little Spanish, lol.

He telephoned me Thursday night and he will learn quickly. As long as I spoke slowly he was able to communicate with me.

Why should you speak Spanish? The kid is coming to America, and he evidently can - and should - speak English, and he will become fluent when he is here. Quite honestly, this country needs to stop making exceptions for those who speak Spanish.

If immigrants speak a language other than Spanish, we correctly expect that they should learn English...but, if they speak Spanish we pander to them and expect that we should learn Spanish. This helps NOONE.

It is no accident that Spanish-speaking immigrants are generally - and by some margin - the slowest to assimilate and become Americanized. By pretending to be accommodating, we do nothing but hold them back...and encourage their expectations that they are somehow...er, "special."

                      SunRabidUSA,

Perhaps you should use your time to improve your own English skills. The word "NOONE" does not exist.

                      Write "NO ONE" instead...

The chickens are doing great, thanks for asking...

Lol! Yup, nothing's changed around here. Glad to hear your chickens are doing well. Good to have them handy since we may need to pull them out again in the future. Take care and thanks for dropping in!

                              Did someone mention chickens?
