"I'm still confused as to why someone would start two threads that contain conflicting statements"

The awnswer of that question isn't a requisite of providing an awnswer to my question is it?

"F1 visa holder are not allowed to engage in employment of any kind without authorization from USCIS"

I got Work Authorization. However I do not know whether Network Marketing or Multi-Level Marketing goes under the same category/umbrella or not. I will however contact INS and find out if its authorized or not. HOWEVER, any help on my question will help me in my "Pursuit of Happiness" if you will. Thanks.

Marmaduk gave you an answer that looked like good advice to me. As far as answering my question as to why you would start two threads at the same time with conflicting information... it puzzles me and I wonder if you're asking for a friend why you didn't say so or why they didn't ask for themselves. In regards to working for a network marketing company or similar the whole point behind those is "building your business" and "residual income" and if you intend to make any money it will take a lot more than 20 hours a week unless you want to wait for years to have any income. I have tried a couple myself and found that wasn't my cup of tea. I've also watched people work very hard for years and continue working their full time jobs with the idea that "someday" they could quit their regular jobs. Then eventually they came to the conclusion that they were going to continue getting checks for $300 or so a month forever because no matter how many people they brought into the business, just as many left. Of course there are some people that are successful. Some of them HAVE to be so they'll have photo's on PR materials and people to speak at meetings. From my experience that is a small percentage.

Good lord, why is this so complicated?

Do you have a green card?

Yes. They you can do it.

          Do you have an EAD?

Yes. They you can do it.

          Otherwise -- you CAN'T.

          It's that freakin' simple kids.

Network marketing - if you think you can drink that cup of tea, do it even without working permission. I know a lot of people (students with F-1) doing it and earn some money, but nobody got caught or something because of illegal work. Anyway you have to use From 1099 to claim your tax return.

I can't give your a definite answer to say it's ok to work, but one fact is that government likes you pay tax and INS are too busy to handle other important issues.

Do not ask your upline. They always think forward.

Michael: So http://www.prepaidlegal.com who's on the NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE offering attorneys as their service is a scam? Your awnswer isn't the awsnwer I'm looking for by the way. This is not a "Does *** Work" thread. This is a "Can I do NM Legally" thread.

Still Learning: Irregardless, it's still another method of making money. And that's what counts. Making Money.

              moondin: What's an "EAD"?

the best search engine: Hmm well even if some students got away with it... If INS tells me NO I will accept it and not mess with INS. If they say Yes I will proceed.

Johnsmith, that's what I was saying, I think it's one of the slower ways and more time consuming but whatever. Oops sorry. I forgot this isn't a "Does *** work?" thread.

I just came across this thread. Yes, you can be involved in a Network Marketing business (like for example Amway).
                  See this: http://www.klaskolaw.com/articles.php?action=view&id=55

The law is very ambiguous on this. The INS (USCIS) has no position on this, and has never been known to deport anyone because of their involvement in Network Marketing. I searched for the case law. None exists. That means the incomes people make in the beginning are so small, that no one in their right mind would consider it "self-employment". It is a "business", but not "self-employment". There is no law against owing a business, as long as you do not "work" in it. That doesn't mean that eventually-No one can say how long-your business might work enough to consider it "self-employment".
                  Check this: http://blog.immigration-america.com/archives/571

Some lawyers will warn you against it. For example: http://www.bluebays.info/wp/?p=37, but you will not have to worry about it.

On a side note, check this article in the Los Angeles times. It brings cheer to my heart, when I see something like this -Go LLC, C Corp, and Sole-Propreitership!!!!
