in order to get approved for a student visa?
I understand that one has to prove that he/she
can be able to pay for tuition costs, etc.
Like how much is enough to convince the INS
or whatever their name is nowadays?

You need to have enough money for the first year of studies (tuition, books, tools and supplies, room and board, living and personal expenses), so look at how much it costs for all of this on the college website you wanna go to, then add $5000 for your persoanl spending to it.
For example if 1 year college cost is $18000 then you have to have $23000 in the bank that's available to you "you'll need to provide evidence that you have the financial means in order to get an I 20)
