  • what do i need to open for a bank account?

hi..id like to help a friend. she spent her school days in CA. she's now in college. but she only have an SS# (not valid for employment), passport, school id. is it possible for her to open a savings account? she does not have any drivers license or state id coz she was here when she was still young and did not have the chance to get one when she was still in legal status. her parents have work permits only and soon GC's. and the processing for her paper is still ongoing. what do we need to open for a bank account? even just a savings account.

As far as banks go, you need to shop around.

Try to find a bank that offers a totally free (of service charges) checking account. Make sure there are no hidden fees such as for debit card transactions or counter deposits.

Try to only use your bank's ATM. If you use an ATM from another bank or in a convenience store, you will be charged by that ATM AND your bank, as much as $2 or more by each. So it can cost you $4 to use a "foreign" ATM.

do we really need to bring a proof of home address when opening a bank account? we only have passport and SS# id (not valid for employment) and a school id.

The bank needs two forms of ID's to open up an account, a social security card is not considered an ID, call and check for urself.School ID card would be good along with the passport.

It depends on the bank. I just switched over to Bank of America. I've got totally free checking with a linked savings account and totally free internet bill pay. I also get a debit card with my picture and signature on it. The only thing I had to do was set up an automatic transfer of $25.00 a month from my checking to my savings. It is a joint account with my husband who is illegal and has no social security number. All he needed was two forms of I.D. The minimum to open each account was $100.00. I found out about it, oddly enough, from a flyer printed in Spanish that I happened across by accident.

Banks should let you open an account with $5.00.

                      $100 is too much!

And what happened to Christmas Clubs?

Find a bank you can open w/o a SSN. Those are known as ghetto banks. meaning you can throw all your "tax-free" drug money in those banks and the IRS can never trace it to anybody or can find it.

When you file taxes and get audited, they can only scan for accounts linked to your SSN. Great loophole huh?!

Also great for business owners to under-report income.
