  • Marriage to a USC--what will happen/what to do?

I entered US as a tourist back in 1992 and stayed. Obviously still here, hence I am classified as an illegal alien. My question is my USC bf and I are planning to get married in December 2002. He is of good moral character and earns well (I also work). What and will there be any problems for us to encounter when he petitions for me? Would hiring a lawyer be of help and speed up the paperwork? How long would I have to wait to a greencard? Please advise. Thanks.

Hiring a lawyer does not speed up the process of getting a green card.

It usually takes about 12 to 18 months nowadays.
