    House Majority Leader Vacancy

Rep. John A. Boehner and Rep. Roy Blunt are vying for the House Majority Leader vacancy left by Rep. Tom DeLay, with the Washington Times reporting that immigration is emerging as one of the key differences between the two conservative Republicans. Mr. Blunt, the acting House majority leader has sided with the anti-immagrationists several times whereas Mr. Boehner was amongst the few Republicans voting against the Sensenbrenner bill. Although the latest counting has Rep. Blunt with a narrow lead over Rep. Boehner, neither candidate appears to have the requisite 116 votes needed to claim victory. For the full Washington Times news story, see here. For a current tally, see here.

    -----------------------------------------------

Rep. john A boehner has a strong chance to win this baby guys, lets prey jesus that he wins and then a guestworker passage will be inavitable by the summer.
Boehner view's are well respected among republican and he will do what he has to help this counry pass a good immigration bill throught the house

    Thank you jesus amen

One little bone that i want to point out to the individuals that says a guest worker program has no chance to ever passing the house because tancredos and a lot of republicans that opposes it..If this was the case, then Boehner should not stand a chance of winning the G.O.P leadership seat because he's very pro-immigrants and even supports amnesty...So again, if this guys is getting enought vote from republican conservatives and is able to contend for the house majority position when he's going against a guy that supports an anti-immigration bill then this show that this anti immigration feelings that are expressed by tancredos and a few minute-men can be easily overcome.

My prediction...a guestworker program immigration bill will pass the house before the summer ends regardless of whether boehner wins or not.

If boehners wins, then it will even be sweeter to all of us

Another useless assumption. A guest worker program will pass in the summer... So what? I wonder why would they pass such a program the light of the House bill. Who would it benefit? working dogs and cats? Or perhaps this is meant to benefit guest working horses!
Aggravated felons are inadmissible, period. INA would be amended to read so, passing a guest worker program in conjunction with the House bill would be yet another waste of money.
A guest worker program is based on the equity of employment. INA has always considered U.S. citizenship a much higher equity than employment. This "guest worker program" would be challenged on grounds of equal protection and unless and amendment to INA is passed to eliminate some provisions of the House bill, the "guest worker program" would be rendered ineffective.
Want some interesting loophole? The House bill amends INA in such a way it "enables" immediate relatives to AOS while at the same time it renders such individuals felons. So you believe one part or another? Sweet candy for the Courts!

Now just why would you pin such hopes on the majority leader of a party that's split on immigration, when even the President, who's the real head of the party, hasn't been able to do anything? Also, if Bush's wishes and words count at all, this would be a true guest worker program--not an amnesty. As I've said before, what illegal alien would want to sign up for a program if it means giving one's records to the government and risking not being able to stay more than 3 or 6 years? And, with stricter enforcement of the laws this time around? Also, what about all those who have no employers to sponsor them? Day laborers, self-employed cleaning ladies, and the like?

What if the bill passed including guest worker program what will happen next? Does the president will sign it right away to become a law or need to be passed or vote again in house of representative?

                Dream on, albatross23.

Look at the numbers: there is no way that an amnesty...er, I mean a guest-worker program will pass through the Congress. As the House of Representatives has already shown when they passed the enlightened H.R. 4437, the American people are opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens. The House of Representatives even voted to end the Diversity Lottery, so amnesty has NO CHANCE.

Devil Boy, I heard you are just a PR. Are you still waiting for your citizenship?
America is prosperous because America is an optimistic nation. America is America because we are a nation of immigrants.

The way a "guest worker" program is being discussed now is as a counterpart bill in the Senate to HR 4437 in the House. If the Senate passes a guest worker bill, then it and 4437 would need to be reconciled in a committee made up by members of both houses, and returned to both houses for votes. So, any guest worker program has to get through the House, just as enforcement measures have to get through the Senate. Assuming the reconciled bill is passed by both houses, the President would have to sign it for it to become law. He could veto it, and I believe it would need a 2/3 majority or something close to that to override his veto.

From the way it's being talked about in the press, without enforcement such as HR 4437 there is no chance of any type of guest worker program.

im all for any provision that HR4437 has, as long has it has a guessworker program and a way for those people to become legal..maybe after 10 years under the program, you get a chance to apply for legal status. They will all have to go in the back of the line tho
