  • India/US--dual citizenship

    Hello All,

What is the latest on the dual citizenship issue? Are folks allowed to take up U.S. citizenship and retain their Indian citizenship? What is a good source of continuing information on this topic?

    Thanks,
    Sam

here is the latest press release on dual citizenship.....i hope you might find it useful.

The Union Cabinet of the Government of India has approved proposed amendments to the Citizenship Act on 6th May, 2003 to facilitate grant of dual citizenship to Indians living in eight countries, consisting of United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Ireland and Finland. A bill is likely to be submitted to the current Budget session of the Parliament for its consideration. After the bill is passed the Government would frame Rules and Regulations for obtaining Dual Citizenship. This process is likely to take between 3 to 6 months. The entitled persons may await operationalisation of the proposal before approaching the Consulate for any further information.

It may be recalled that Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee had announced the grant of dual citizenship during the first Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Celebrations on 9th January, 2003 in New Delhi.
