I don't know why this is, maybe the media here are having a field day and milk the story to squeeze the last drop of the juicy story. If you were watching CNN yesterday, you can notice that the student who shot the video of the shooting was later interviewed by one reporter. Later on the same interview appeared on CNN two more times conducted by two different interviewers. It was funny to see how they edited the interview.

Houston, once again, a great post. Very good observations.

What is most shocking is that Virginia Tech is one of the best universities in the country, in fact the second after MIT in technical/engineering fields. Students who go there are very motivated, intelligent, success oriented. This is what makes this tragedy even more pronounced.

Most of the time, shootings or killings that happen outside Europe and the US are generally not reported by Western media. Take for instace the Nagasaki’s mayor Kazunaga Ito. Another poster gave an example of a German incident. But American media particularly sensationalizes the event. When NBC, CNN, Fox start showing pictures Then we have the incident in the Philippines were seven heads of hostages from the Abu Sayif group were delivered to a Filipino miliatry base.

I find this an example of a hate crime since my wife is Asian. Furthermore, your statement has now terminated your right under 2nd amendment and you should be permanently committed to a mental institution. We don't want your kind on the streets.

Domestic issues are reported by the domestic media, maybe that's why we mostly hear about U.S. incidents and not so much about those happening overseas. Violence is a worldwide plague and not some exclusive phenomena of the U.S.

With the Japan shooting, it was barely reported by the Japan Times; yet BBC, NYT, and other newpapers reported the event in much more detail. Yet in Japan, the event shattered the Japanese image that the country is immune to such events.

Iperson,

How insensitive of you to ask that question.
It is unbelievable tragic what happened.

Insensitive? It wasn't insensitive of iperson to ask those questions. I'm glad she did. I was curious also. How do you think anybody finds out anything about anything in the world if they don't ask questions. One can ask although it might not get answered.

Don't you realize with ProudUSC living so close (and for however long we don't know) and her being a poster on this board that it's rare that we're interfacing with somebody on this particular discussion board living in such close proximity to the family?

ProudUSC makes a statement about it and you don't expect anybody to respond? What's wrong with asking her that question? Media asks questions. We shouldn't? I'd ask the same questions iperson asks. There's nothing immoral about asking those questions on this site. It wasn't like she was at a funeral home in front of families and asking ProudUSC these questions in front of them. Too conservative. Geez!

Thank you, Vegado, for your kind words. I didn't take Iperson's comments in a negative way. I didn't know the family of the shooter - not in my neighborhood, but about 1 mile away. The media circus, as told by my son who went over there yesterday, was ridiculous. I think the whole block was engulfed with reporters and policemen. I feel very sorry for this family. The hatred that is being pointed toward them is being misdirected. Their address was printed on the internet - totally exposed for the world to see. They own a dry cleaning business from what I understand - this tragedy could put them out of business! My prayers are for everyone involved in this horrible event, including the family of the shooter.

God Bless America!

oh please people!!! No one cares about how good school or bad school it is in this situation. Only people care about its rank if they were to apply to VA Tech. Other than that, no one cares about its rank. It could be the 2nd, or the worst school in the USA, it still wouldn't make me feel better about what happened last Monday! And I don't think the families whose son and daughter died last week would get relieved if they knew this wasn't the worst school but among the top, so you might as well stop this marmaduk! NO ONE cares about the schools rank! You know what we care???? We care, that it happened, and that it's sad, and wish it would've never ever happened! (regardless of the school's rank) Well, almost a week past by since you wrote this, so I might as well will find an answer back from you where you realized the point of this topic. That would be a supreme shock as well. Smile Thank you for your understanding!

Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.
