Thanks a lot for sharing this! It warmed my heart to see such a giving, selfless man. I expected him to be very well off, living in some mansion somewhere, having nothing to do with his money except to give it away and yet, despite his circumstances, he is out helping his fellowmen. What a guy!
And yes, I agree with you that it's sad to see that long line of people, especially those who got turned away (some people in 3rd world countries may have even better medical care than some of those people I saw there). One of the lucky ones who got help is from the same state as I'm in, GA.

Actually SOM, when I was in ER not long ago, from what I could see, most people there were in fact there for an emergency. One girl had blood pouring from her head, and she had to go through the stupid routine of going to window 1, 2 3 and triage, even lining up.
I was there on an emergency, suspected embolisms, couldn't breathe properly, yet stuck in the waiting area for several hours. (I still have to pay the bills as I didnt have insurance, no free care for me of course as not entitled to help). ER was filling up, more people needing attention, and from what I could see, needed it badly too. Most did not have insurance from what I could hear, or didn't have enough cover. Lots of elderly people there, in bad way..just left there suffering while waiting to be seen.
One lady said she had worked for many years, but the insurance she has now doesn't cover for much and she pays out hundreds of dollars on meds.
Very sad indeed.
I know many people that need medical attention, that need their follow ups after surgery, or cancer, or even have found out they have something bad as cancer, but cannot afford treatment or meds.
Its so sad that so many people in this country cannot afford health insurance or do not have enough coverage to afford to go and be seen.

You talk about not wanting to subsidize others with your taxes but it's already happening. The high numbers of uninsured/underinsured causes the for-profit medical system to recoup it's cost from those who have insurance or can pay.
With the cost of both medical practitioners and insurance ever upward, and a system that relies on profit to survive, eventually the bubble will burst. Government will be forced to use taxes to bail out the medical industry in much the same way as they have with banking and housing recently. What's the difference between that scenario and Universal Heathcare setup before it happens which most likely will work out cheaper in the long run and provide for all?
Also diseases like polio and TB have been making a comeback in the past few years. These are highly contagious and affect everybody regardless of wealth or not. Wouldn't you want to contain it now rather than let it fester and eventually become a public health issue?
