I have a regular green card. Interestingly, I got my regular green card 2 weeks before moving to Japan with my husband!
RationalE, THANK YOU for the link! I will make a copy and keep it with my immigration stuff. It's very helpful. The way I read this, it seems I may not need a re-entry permit when we move back to the States in 3 years. I may still need one (or need to make it back to the US within a year) if I visit in-between...

Wow, I had no idea that the 1-800 # was not answered by USCIS representatives. That explains a lot!
Baby - my husband is stationed at NAF Atsugi... where are you?

Well, the JAG researched the issue and told me that I do NOT need a reentry permit. For peace of mind, I may still try to get back to the US before 12 months have gone by.
Thank you for all the replies and help!

I just hope the customs people will feel the same way. They have the only authotity to grant or deny your entry. I am not trying to scare you, but it seems to me that that the customs people just don't know the rules that well. If I were you, I will bring the research that JAG did with you, just in case along with your husband in full dress A uniform.
