OKLAHOMA, TULSAIn HB 1804's first month, no Tulsa arrests By NICOLE MARSHALL & CURTIS KILLMAN World Staff Writers 12/9/2007 The number of local immigration detentions has fallen since September, law enforcers say. Tulsa law enforcement leaders say it has been business as usual in the month since a new immigration law took effect. No arrests for violations of the law, known as House Bill 1804, have been made in the city, they said last week. The law, passed in the Legislature's last session, makes it a felony to knowingly transport illegal aliens, requires proof of citizenship to receive certain government benefits and creates barriers to hiring illegal immigrants. After July 1, it will require contractors to check the immigration status of workers. Chief Deputy Tim Albin of the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office and Tulsa Police Chief Ron Palmer said one of their main goals has been to dispel rumors and educate people about law officers' role in enforcing the law. Palmer said, "We are continuing to work with the Hispanic community to get this information out and let them know that even though some people believe we are making wholesale 1804 arrests, the TPD has made no 1804 arrests in the 30-day period following the enactment of the law." Surge in June, then decline: Albin said the number of people held in the Tulsa Jail on immigration issues jumped in June for several reasons, including increased cooperation between jail workers and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Those immigration detainers -- orders to hold a prisoner -- have nothing to do with the state law. A Tulsa World analysis of jail records shows that the number of immigration detentions has decreased each month since September. In November, the month HB 1804 took effect, 105 people were booked into the jail on immigration detainers. The number of people jailed on such detainers was 133 in October and 143 in September. In August, 110 immigration detainees were booked into the jail. Albin said "all the moons lined up, so to speak" at the beginnning of June. The Sheriff's Office entered into a partnership with ICE that allows deputies to access ICE records directly. Deputies can also place and release detainers on inmates who are in violation of immigration laws. Political leaders were also weighing in on the issue in June. After the City Council approved a resolution on the matter, Mayor Kathy Taylor issued a policy clarification that month stating that police will conduct immigration checks on all people who are arrested on complaints of felonies and full-custody misdemeanors. U.S. Rep. John Sullivan, R-Okla., called for the policy clarification. About that time, several high-profile cases exposed holes in the system when undocumented immigrants were booked into the jail and released on bond. "We decided we have got to figure out how to address this, and many agencies came together to do just that," Albin said. But the reason for the decrease in holds during the last few months is not as obvious, he said. Those numbers could fluctuate because of law enforcement task forces targeting certain types of crimes, he said. Also, jail populations are cyclical, so numbers may change based on "many things that are happening outside the jail," he said. Albin also noted that many people who are being held now for federal immigration officials have been in the jail before, released on bond and arrested again on warrants. Reasons for arrests: In all, 5 percent of all people booked into the Tulsa Jail in November had complaints that included ICE detainers. Driving-related issues snared most of those held for ICE. Failure to have a driver's license was the chief arrest complaint among the detainees, with 84 people booked last month on that offense. Having no proof of vehicle liability insurance ranked second, with 55 people booked on that complaint. Nearly one in four of those held for ICE in November -- 23 -- were booked on complaints that included driving under the influence. A handful of those with immigration holds were also facing more serious charges. Seven face various sexual assault charges. "We are trying to arm people with facts so that they can make good decisions," Palmer said. "If you are driving drunk, if you are driving without a driver's license . . . or even committing the smallest traffic violations, if you can't produce valid ID to satisfy the court of who you are to ensure your appearance in court, the likelihood is that you will be detained," he said. "At that point, if there is still a question about the ID, the likelihood of you being checked with ICE is really pretty good based upon what the Sheriff's Department is doing with their agreement with ICE agents." Crime victims protected: One misconception is that illegal immigrants who are victims of crime will automatically be deported if they notify authorities. That's not true, Albin said. He cited as an example a case that led Tulsa deputies to arrest two illegal immigrants, Pedro and Rosalio Morin, last month on complaints alleging that they sexually assaulted a female relative, who is 11. The girl -- who told detectives that she had been molested since she was 7 -- and her family are also in this country illegally, he said. Charges have not yet been approved against the Morin brothers, who remain in custody. If charges are approved, county detectives and ICE agents can start considering what they can do to help the girl and her family obtain legal status while the case progresses through the courts. There is a path to permanent status for crime victims, Albin said, but many factors must be considered and each case is viewed individually. Palmer said police have also been explaining to Hispanic residents that police will not target them because of their race. They have encouraged people who believe they were targeted because of racial bias to file complaints, and they have assured them that their immigration status will not be checked if they do so. Such complaints "have not been appreciatively higher" since the law took effect, Palmer said. The department has handed out hundreds of cards to Hispanic residents explaining the difference between a ticketed arrest and an in-custody arrest, he said. "We think we are making some progress in regard to the fear factor," Palmer said. "There are still people concerned out there, but there are still people out there who are in fact driving without a license and driving without insurance, and that fact can't be denied."

Oklahoma lawmaker plans second law on immigration, criticizes bishop
By Marilyn Duck Catholic News Service
TULSA, Okla. (CNS) -- The state lawmaker who wrote a new Oklahoma statute on illegal immigration that is considered one of the harshest such laws in the nation has said he plans to follow it up with "son of H.B. 1804" when the Legislature convenes in January.
The Oklahoma Taxpayer and Citizen Protection Act of 2007, also known as H.B. 1804, took effect Nov. 1.
Republican State Rep. Randy Terrill also said Tulsa Bishop Edward J. Slattery's Nov. 26 pastoral letter concerning the law was "noble but misguided."
Terrill said Catholic leaders oppose the law because "the fastest-growing parishes in Catholicism are non-English-speaking" and that "a good portion" of their congregations "are illegal aliens."
His remarks were quoted in the Nov. 29 Tulsa World daily newspaper. The following day, Bishop Slattery told a news conference he has been advised by attorneys that the new law is unconstitutionally vague and will not withstand scrutiny in the federal courts.
"It'll be too late by then," he said, noting that many immigrants, legal as well as illegal, have already fled the state and are continuing to flee.
"The law is designed to put fear in the people so they will leave, and they are. The law is working," Bishop Slattery said.
It makes it a felony to knowingly harbor or transport an illegal alien and creates specific barriers to hiring illegal immigrants. It requires proof of citizenship to obtain certain government benefits and requires all state agencies and contractors to check the immigration status of all workers after July 1, 2008.
The bishop's pastoral is titled "The Suffering Faces of the Poor Are the Suffering Face of Christ" ("Los rostros sufrientes de los pobres son el rostro sufriente de Cristo").
It calls for equal accessibility to all Catholic programs regardless of legal status, and pledges to provide legal assistance through Catholic Charities to those who need help in establishing or maintaining their legal residence in this country.
It says the diocese will work with legal agencies to prepare a standardized "power of attorney" form that parents can use to indicate who should assume guardianship over their dependent children should those parents be arrested and face deportation. It also will provide Catholic foster care for parents who have formally indicated who should care for their children.
In his press conference remarks Nov. 30, he said Terrill "didn't do his homework" when the representative told the Tulsa World that the diocesan Catholic Charities agency receives some taxpayer money. "Let's call a spade a spade," the lawmaker said.
But the same story quoted Kevin Sartorius, an official with Catholic Charities of the Tulsa Diocese, who pointed out that federal funding accounts for less than 2 percent of the agency's budget, and none of it is used to benefit illegal immigrants.
Bishop Slattery said Catholic Charities receives $48,000 to resettle refugees who are brought to the diocese by federal officials and another $15,000 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for emergency food distribution.
"I wonder on how many other things he didn't do his homework," Bishop Slattery said.
The bishop reiterated his long-standing view that immigration reform is desperately needed, and it must come at the federal level. He predicted reform will come but not until after the '08 elections. He also said he believes the immigration system's multiple problems will be addressed no matter who wins the election.
Politicians do not have "strong enough character" to address the inequities if it is going to cost them votes, he said. "It's a lack of courage. No one wants to lead anymore."
He said H.B. 1804 or any subsequent legislation that denies such fundamental rights as citizenship being granted to all people born in the Unites States or makes English the official state language -- both possibilities floated by Terrill -- simply will not stand constitutional muster.
"There is no good argument for the law," the bishop said. "Yes, they are in this country illegally, but we cannot send them back; there are too many. That can't happen. The borders need to be closed off. But this law is not the answer. It (causes) a lot of unnecessary suffering."
And, he added, "states shouldn't be allowed to set their own immigration policy."

UTAH
Immigration bills brewing
By Deborah Bulkeley Deseret Morning News Published: Monday, Dec. 10, 2007 12:19 a.m. MST A Utah lawmaker who wants to take a tough stand on illegal immigration seems to be garnering support from the GOP — at least locally. And Sen. Bill Hickman, R-St. George, says the more people he talks to, the more support he gets.
"The federal Congress ... have been unwilling to take the leadership role to get this done," Hickman said. "The states, as a result, across the nation are saying, 'Look, if you can't handle it, we will."'
Hickman is modeling comprehensive Utah legislation after a new Oklahoma law, which is the broadest of 244 laws dealing with immigration passed so far this year in 46 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Two more bills are awaiting gubernatorial action, according to the new NCSL report, which covers bills passed as of Nov. 16.
Some 1,562 bills dealing with immigration were introduced this year across the nation, including in Utah, the NCSL reports.
"In the continued absence of a comprehensive federal reform of the United States' challenged immigration system, states have displayed an unprecedented level of activity," the report states.
The measures listed as being passed by Utah's Legislature weren't necessarily directly aimed at immigration. For example, one new law in the report makes it easier for nonresidents, including legal immigrants, to obtain residency for tuition purposes.
Meanwhile, federal proposals aimed directly at illegal immigration failed this year, including the collapse of a much-anticipated immigration overhaul bill in the U.S. Senate. Utah Senate Majority Leader Curt Bramble, R-Provo, predicts a "very active session" on Utah's Capitol Hill when it comes to proposals dealing with illegal immigration.
"Right now I don't think anyone realistically thinks Congress is going to act," said Bramble, a member of the NCSL executive committee.
"The federal government is such a failure, the states have been forced to do something," Bramble said. "There may be a firmer conviction and resolve to act."
Sylvia Haro, who chairs the Utah Republican Hispanic Assembly, hopes that rather than focusing on sending a message to the federal government, lawmakers will look at the impact such measures would have on the state and its economy.
"I agree, we need to secure the border, but what are we going to do with the people here?" Haro said. "There is a demand for the work force."
Next year, Hickman's bill will be among several that lawmakers will consider to make it more difficult for undocumented immigrants to live in Utah.
The bill, still being drafted, would create a class A misdemeanor for harboring or transporting undocumented immigrants; would create barriers against hiring or providing public benefits to the undocumented; and would allow local law officers to play an enforcement role. It also would repeal a law allowing in-state tuition for qualified undocumented immigrants and repeal their driving privilege cards.
Other lawmakers are working on legislation that touches independently on particular aspects of the illegal immigration issue.
"We'll just have to let the debate unfold," Bramble said. "Many proposals are going to have challenges based on federal pre-emption and constitutionality."
The Washington County Republican Party's Central Committee has passed a resolution supporting Hickman in his effort. It was to be sent to Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr., as well as the speaker of the House and Senate president. The Washington County Republican Women have passed a similar resolution.
The county resolution points to a lack of federal action to secure borders and enforce employment laws, along with "significant financial burdens," as reasons for the support.
"We are absolutely out of patience," Hickman said. "We have been trying to be patient and wait for Congress to act on this issue."

By requiring immigrants to reapply for new cards, the federal agency would be able to update their personal information, conduct background checks and electronically store their fingerprints and photographs. U.S. agency considers eliminating old green cards without expiration datesPosted: 2007/12/11 From: Mathaba News Network LOS ANGELES, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) is considering a proposal to eliminate hundreds of thousands of green cards issued years ago without expiration dates, it was reported Monday. The move would help the agency track down individuals who have committed crimes and might be eligible for deportation, according to the Los Angeles Times. By requiring immigrants to reapply for new cards, the federal agency would be able to update their personal information, conduct background checks and electronically store their fingerprints and photographs, the paper said. Authorities estimate there are 750,000 such green cards in circulation -- some of which are now nearly 30 years old. They were issued between 1979 and 1989. Newer cards, which expire after 10 years, are equipped with technology that makes them less susceptible to fraud, immigration services spokeswoman Sharon Rummery said. For example, the new cards feature miniature images of all the U.S. presidents, she said. "There is, of course, a security aspect to it," she said. "It's harder to counterfeit the newer green cards." Groups that favor more controls on immigration said the change is necessary for national security. The new cards provide "at least a speed ***p along the road" for counterfeiters, said Rick Oltman, spokesman for Californians for Population Stabilization. "With freedom comes responsibility," Oltman said. "It doesn't seem to be too onerous a thing to require them to get new green cards that provide greater security and give us all greater peace of mind." But some immigration attorneys and advocates said the proposal is just another way to round up legal permanent residents with criminal records. Under the law, green card holders who have committed certain crimes are eligible for deportation. "They don't have the manpower to find these people," said Los Angeles immigration attorney Carl Shusterman. "This makes it kind of easy. The people will have to come to them .... A lot of people will be put into deportation proceedings."

MASSACHUSETTS
US extends immigrant database to police
By Maria Sacchetti Globe Staff / December 12, 2007
Federal immigration agents are forging new alliances with local law enforcement agencies across Massachusetts in an effort to crack down on hard-core criminals, spurring anxiety and applause within immigrant communities.
more stories like this Romney to run ad against Huckabee Romney to run ad against Huckabee, weighs how negative to go GOP hopefuls cool rhetoric Romney says he's not to blame for illegal workers at his home Romney painters facing inquiry The Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency has been taking its message on the road from Concord to Cape Cod, offering so-called ICE 101 presentations to the state's district attorneys, probation officers, and, most recently, large police departments, including those in Lowell and Lynn.
Some departments have eagerly signed on. In recent months, federal agents have trained select Framingham police, Barnstable County sheriffs, and state correction officers to detect and detain illegal immigrants for possible deportation. And, with immigration officials' encouragement, police and other agencies across the state are making thousands of calls to a federal clearinghouse in Vermont to check the status and identity of immigrants.
In some cases, the alliance is initiated by the municipalities. In other instances, it involves encouragement from the immigration agency to take advantage of its expertise. In almost all cases, the fledgling partnerships have stirred controversy about their impact on Massachusetts' rapidly growing immigrant populations at a time when illegal immigration is a key issue in the presidential campaign.
"It's not like we're forcing anything on them," said Bruce Foucart, the special agent in charge of Immigration and Customs Enforcement's office of investigations in Boston, which covers New England. "If we can establish a rapport with the police, district attorneys, and the communities, it's only going to benefit public safety as a whole. We've established some pretty good relationships, officer to officer, agent to agent."
Immigration authorities say the partnerships are helping cities and towns pluck criminals from their streets, and some local immigrant advocates agree. But statewide immigration advocates fear the push is opening a new front in immigration enforcement and deterring immigrants from reporting crimes.
On a recent night, their differing views played out in a first-floor auditorium in the Framingham Police Department, as part of a weekly seminar on a variety of issues, including the town's gang problem. Police dimmed the lights and flashed photographs on a movie screen of tattooed gang members. Police said the suspects may be involved in everything from home invasions to bloody brawls at the local McDonald's, and called the federal database a tool that can help them catch criminals.
Several advocates for immigrants whistled and applauded the department's efforts to work with the federal agency and detain the suspects.
"We are good people," added Carlos A. F. Da Silva, a community liaison. "It's very important to us to get these thugs out of the streets. They've been robbing people. We need to stop that."
But other community leaders shook their heads, saying the plan to work with immigration authorities made them uneasy. They are concerned that immigrants whose only violation is being in the United States illegally, a civil offense, will be swept up in the effort.
"I just feel the Police Department puts our community in threat," said Fausto da Rocha, executive director of the Brazilian Immigrant Center, who said police loosely define gangs as two or more people conspiring to commit crime. "They've trained two officers to go against our people."
more stories like thisSergeant Richard Pomales, one of the Framingham's two officers trained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the criticism is frustrating when police are trying to reduce crime and protect all residents.
"Are you telling us to look the other way?" Pomales asked the attendees. "You are their first victims."
Pomales said he is haunted by news reports in August that an illegal immigrant in Newark was arrested in the fatal shootings of three college students. The man had been out on bail for another crime when he could have been held because of his immigration status.
Framingham is the only local police department in Massachusetts that has obtained authority to arrest illegal immigrants under a 1996 law designed to expand the federal agency's reach by deputizing state and local officials to help. Nationally, about 80 law enforcement agencies have applied for the authority. Before he left office as governor, Mitt Romney authorized State Police to enforce federal immigration laws, but Governor Deval Patrick overturned the decision in January, preferring to let corrections officers handle it instead.
Framingham's police chief, Steven Carl, said he asked to join the program because the federal immigration agency's database contains information that is not always available in state government databases, including whether a person overstayed a visa or was caught sneaking into the country. Carl emphasized that he targets crime, especially gangs, guns, drugs, and document fraud.
"When you're an undocumented immigrant it's very difficult, because we have to find out who you are to get you. You're a ghost," Carl said.
In recent months, Barnstable County sheriffs and Department of Correction officials have also had Immigration and Customs Enforcement train some of their employees. Now, local and state correction officers can screen inmates and turn them over to federal agents for deportation once their time is served.
"I did it because I didn't want people who were committing crimes here and who were illegal to just be released back into the street because people didn't know what to do with them," said Barnstable County Sheriff James Cummings. "If they have to finish serving time here, fine, but then send them back to where they came from."
Framingham, Barnstable County, and the state have formal agreements to work with the federal immigration agency, but that isn't necessary for authorities to collaborate in other ways.
Any law enforcement agency statewide can check detained immigrants' identities over the telephone through the Law Enforcement Support Center, which was created in 1996 and launched in Massachusetts two years later. From October 2006 to September, Massachusetts law enforcement officers checked nearly 14,700 immigrants, up from 10,093 during the same period in 2003-04.
As a result of this center alone, federal authorities detained 599 immigrants in Massachusetts last fiscal year, five times as many as in 2005, according to ICE.
Nationally, calls to the center soared from a mere 4,000 in fiscal 1996 to more than 728,000 in fiscal 2007. The center logged its highest number of detainees last year - 20,339 people. The center is open 24 hours, 365 days a year.
Everett police said they have used the center for the past two years to identify people, such as someone who is stopped for a traffic issue but lacks identification.
Ali Noorani, executive director of the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition, said he opposes the collaboration on concerns that individual officers could target immigrants through racial profiling - and that immigrants will become afraid to work with police. He said he supports having local and federal authorities cooperate to deport violent criminals.
"The line is getting very, very blurry between local law enforcement and immigration enforcement, and if it is up to the individual officer of when he or she can or cannot call ICE, the opportunities for abuse and profiling are extreme," he said.

Mike Huckabee's Shamnesty for Illegal Aliens! December 12, 2007 by William Gheen President of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC ALIPAC www.alipac.us In August of 2005, I was called for an interview by THV-TV News out of Little Rock Arkansas to comment on Governor Mike Huckabee's comments complaining about an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raid on local chicken plants, which resulted in the arrest of 119 illegal aliens. What I said during the interview is even more relevant today "Governor Huckabee is known nationally as an illegal alien’s best friend!" At the time, Mike Huckabee was known nationally for supporting in-state tuition for illegal aliens, which is massively opposed by American voters four to one! This plan forces American taxpayers to subsidize tuition for illegal aliens, thus replacing American students in the limited seats in colleges, while providing the wrong message and encouraging more people to illegally immigrate and bring their children into the U.S. to be trained for jobs, it is illegal for them to have! The fact that Mike Huckabee would support a policy change despised by 80% of those he swore to represent in public office says a lot about what we could expect from the man as President. Furthermore, his open denouncement of ICE raids in Arkansas is probably the result of his heavy financial support from Open Borders corporations like Tyson Foods. In Arkansas, the chicken processing lobby is so powerful they call it "Big Chicken". While the public was cheering the raids, Tyson Foods was upset about ICE raids and so was their bought and paid for politician Mike Huckabee! Tyson Foods Inc., has their global headquarters located in Springdale, Arkansas and they are the worlds largest processor and marketer of chicken, beef, and pork. They were large contributors to Mike Huckabee as Governor and now their federal political action committee, TYPAC, is backing his campaign for President. Tyson Foods Inc. is one of the most egregious corporate violators of our Federal laws against hiring illegals in America! In 2003, the U.S. Justice Department claimed that 15 Tyson plants in nine states had been conspiring since 1994 to recruit illegal immigrants, and that this practice was known by senior executives at Tyson corporate headquarters. It was determined in court that Tyson managers had been intentionally working with organized crime elements and temporary service agencies to import illegal alien workers, replace their American workers, and drive down wages. Tyson agreed to join the basic pilot program to screen new employees in 2004, but later raids continued to find large numbers of illegal aliens working for Tyson! Earlier this year, the company supported the thrice-failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesties that were pushed in the U.S. Senate. These legislative attempts to legalize Tyson's illegal labor workforce failed due to massive public opposition with Zogby polls showing only 3% of Americans approving of how Congress was handling the issue! The backlash was so massive that angry calls to lawmakers, which were ranging 50 to 1 opposed, overloaded and shut down the entire Capital phone system! Mike Huckabee is now experiencing a surge in the polls as GOP core voters continue to abandon John McCain and Rudy Giuliani for their pro Amnesty pro illegal alien records and stances. This is bringing Huckabee's immigration stances into the limelight for scrutiny and his campaign is fully aware that missteps on this issue can send him back down the ladder like McCain and Giuliani. That is why his campaign has released the "The Secure America Plan" which details his 9-point plan to facilitate the "enforcement of our immigration laws and results in the attrition of the illegal immigrant population" This is exactly what America wants to hear, America wants to hear about reducing the number or illegal aliens in America. Americans want illegal aliens to return to their home nations as current law dictates! However, there is a big problem with Huckabee's plan. While most of the provisions will be positively received by the American public, especially voters, his promises to crack down on employers, build a fence, and bolster the border patrol are all nullified by positions number 3 and 9. Huckabee makes it clear that illegal aliens will have to leave the U.S. However, what he is advocating is the 'touch back' provision which was a trick fielded by the supporters of the failed "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills in the U.S. Senate this year. In position #9, Huckabee says he would increase visas and expedite immigration processes so "those patiently and responsibly seeking to come here legally will not have to wait decades to share in the American Dream" Such changes would clearly increase legal immigration levels, which already stand at 1.4 million per year, making America the most generous nation in the world for legal immigration. The majority of the American public, while generally supportive of legal immigrants, is in no mood for such a massive expansion of legal immigration levels considering the intense public backlash against illegal immigration. Huckabee's intent to expedite legal immigration ties into the real problem with his plan. This is revealed in item #3, where he would grant amnesty to illegal aliens by having them sign up with the government and then leave the U.S. for a day or two and later on pick up new documents across the border to walk back in and say "Look at me! I came in legally this time!" What a devilish farce! Millions of illegal aliens in America would quickly have no fear of immigration law enforcement and would be on the "path to citizenship" receiving benefits at the taxpayers’ expense. This provision would in effect nullify all of the other immigration enforcement promises of Mike Huckabee. The mere fact that Mike Huckabee's campaign is imitating the tactics that the pro Amnesty lobby in Washington, DC deployed earlier this year tells us exactly who he serves and that he is willing to try and deceive the American public to accomplish his political agenda! Mike Huckabee has is now promoting the Pence Plan that we call SHAMNESTY! One more President like that in the White House and we can kiss America goodbye. We will have millions of illegal aliens who have become untouchable by immigration authorities and millions more on the way once America has shown she is defenseless against the Global corporations pushing this agenda! It gets worse, according to Michelle Malkin's article "Meet the GOP's Border Control Cross-Dressers" (Dec. 11, 2007) Huckabee joins McCain and Guiliani on the dishonest pro amnesty politician front! It appears that Mike Huckabee has been pandering to the Open Borders Hispanic racist group LULAC (League of United Latin American Citizens), where he has promised them an 'open door' policy. He has also criticized state legislators in Arkansas who wanted to require proof of citizenship to register to vote! That really takes the cake when you think about the fact Mike Huckabee wants illegal aliens to be able to vote! Even more disturbing is Mike Huckabee's decision to follow the deplorable lead of Senator's Harry Reid and Ted Kennedy by deriding Americans who are concerned about illegal immigration and opposed to the Senate AMNESTY bills as "driven by racism or nativism." In an attempt to build street credibility, the Huckabee campaign claims they were inspired to create their plan from an article by Center for Immigration Studies (Cis.org) Mark Krikorian. While Mr. Krikorian is renowned for his concepts of attrition enforcement, he is opposed to the Touchback amnesty provisions Huckabee's team built in as this measure would nullify all of the other enforcement provisions listed! Mr. Krikorian, while cited as a source by Mike Huckabee's team, would probably call the plan another "No Amnesty Amnesty". Mike Huckabee is clearly an Open Borders fanatic. This is why there is a shockwave moving through the immigration enforcement movement after hearing of the endorsement of the Huckabee campaign by Co-Founder of the original Minuteman Project, Jim Gilchrist. The embarrassing truth is that Jim Gilchrist has forced distance between himself and the vast majority of other groups and leaders in the immigration enforcement movement over the last year because of his egotistical, unstable, destructive, and growingly bizarre behavior. His behind the scenes actions have created a great deal of alarm from groups such as ALIPAC who were a part of the original Minuteman effort and who have supported Mr. Gilchrist in the past. After Jim Gilchrist split with co-founder Chris Simcox of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, he quickly made enemies out of any group that refused to take a side in the conflict. He would not respect the neutrality of other sovereign groups and adopted an "with us or against us" stance that drove many away. Jim Gilchrist's last attempt to muster Minutemen volunteers fell apart during the Laredo Texas operations he launched. While the opening day had many attendees, within one week there were less than ten volunteers on the border and Gilchrist himself was not even present most of the time. Since that time, Jim has been engaged in a bitter battle against the Executive Board of his 501(c) organization after they terminated him from his position as director, which has thrown the whole organization into court battles. While most of our movement was neck deep in the battle against the Senate "Comprehensive Immigration Reform" amnesty bills, Gilchrist was busy sending out his next wave of bitter e-mails decrying the actions of the "hijackers" of his organization. Many of us in the movement have been keeping quiet about these problems, the threatening e-mails, and personal attacks, hoping that Jim Gilchrist would fade into the background, where his reckless behavior and failed organization could do no further harm to the movement, which is much bigger than Minuteman. We had hoped that his initial contributions to the cause in Minuteman 1 could be saved from his actions of late. Today, the rest of the nation is painfully learning what we know about Jim Gilchrist, due to his endorsement of pro amnesty Open Borders Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. Since the Minuteman Project is a tax-free nonprofit organization, which is prohibited by law from endorsing candidates, one has to wonder why Jim Gilchrist is making endorsements for President, which will surely be challenged by other Presidential campaigns and pro amnesty groups. Perhaps Jim just skimmed over the Huckabee plan like many Americans will do and fell for the bait? It is likely that he was so happy to hear from a Presidential campaign in the midst of his isolation that he jumped at the opportunity to be relevant again? Jim Gilchrist and Mike Huckabee have made a terrible mistake by supporting a Presidential campaign which has stances in favor of "touchback" amnesty for illegal aliens, benefits for illegal aliens, voting access for illegal aliens, "comprehensive immigration reform" amnesty, expanded visa programs, and more legal immigration. They are both attempting to give the illegal aliens, the US Chamber of Commerce, and their supporting groups like Tyson Foods, LULAC, and La Raza exactly what they want, while trying to dupe the American public. As Americans representing the 80% of our fellow countrymen and women who oppose this radical Open Borders agenda, we must do all we can to expose Mike Huckabee's true stances and record. We must also make it clear to Jim Gilchrist that he has just erased any positive contributions he may have made in the past to the immigration enforcement movement by lending his support to an 'Illegal Alien's best friend'. --- Paid for by Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) http://www.alipac.us Post Office Box 30966, Raleigh, NC 27622-0966 Tel: (919) 787-6009 Toll Free: (866) 329-3999 FEC ID: C00405878 _________________ illegal immigration news in America Enforce our existing immigration laws!
