Ntfd3: Where is East Germany, exactly? I hope that your understanding of economics is better than your knowledge of either geography or politics...although I doubt that is the case.

This is really about immigration and not about the politics of Europe. The USA vets just how many people they let in and why and how!!! Europe is experiencing some major problems at the moment and not just Germany. Its not about pay back from WW2 that its anybodies right!! that is immature and incorrect to say. Were 60 years ahead. The population is far greater and technology far advanced. Basically there is not enough work for everyone. Immigration has always been a complex theme if it was so easy we wouldnt be here talkin today. All I say is that by opening up the EU as much as it has it has caused a lot of hardship. The grass isnt always greener on the other side!! as for the trabant... east germans will tell u .. when they were cut off from the west they all had jobs they dont anymore, they all were entitiled to child care, they cant even pay for it anymore, and the cost of living was 10 fold cheaper than it is today. A survey was done it can be looked up in an old copy of Stern and Focus, 7 out of 10 east germans thought life was better before rather than after. Life is tough.. we cant choose what country were born into, the car was a bad example talk to the people in africa that will never own a car in their whole life. Immigration is there to protect what is there already.

And this is coming from someone who allegedly has a MA in international trade? wacko

Why don't you read this? Or how about this? Or how about this> Or how about this? Protectionism is on the rise in Europe for this type of fear. It is very popular in most countries of the EU, including Czech Republic and Poland. It is a combination of nationalism, hysteria, old European politics, and modern European politics. Chinese companies still have a hard time, more than American companies, to attempt to import products into Europe, despite the lifting of tariffs on shoes. But ntfd3 has been correct about his country, Germany, including eastern Germany, formerly known as the People's Republic of East Germany. As for investment in the former People's Republic of East Germany, there are several books on the subject. Why don't you go to Boarders or the library and read, "East Germany's Economic Development since Unification" or "Some Lessons from Economic Transformation in East Germany" or "Why East Germany Failed to Become an Economic Tiger: Sobering Convergence Lessons from German Unification."

He is talking about the former People Republic of East Germany. Besides, your understanding of economics and geography is comparable to a fifth grader. Go back HOME dufus.

Oh and just by the way - the East Germany had the best chances to succeed after 1989 compared to ther Central and Eastern European Countries. I do agree there is still much work to do too but still by your 'warm' reaction you are just simply proving I was right - in my post about Trabanst, buddy!

your correct east germany did have the best chance to suceed after 1989, however.... then followed more countries with yet more grants from the EU... and the greedy companies saw a quick buck to be made... and just upped and left... draining the well dry and going to the next one.. and the trabant.. now a collectors item..

I remember one of my neighbors had a blue trabant.
It was one of the cutest cars ever.
And it never broke one time. A good German workmanship. If they still had it (I think they sold it), it would have been driving just as fine today.

About your whining and complaining about the changes ntfd3, no country has any birth rights to prosperity just because they are Germans or Americans or any nationality.
Changes such as EU will be difficult and nobody said it would be easy.
I see the creation of EU one of the most important events in European history, ever. Especially from the safety issue against the inside conflicts as well as the rising Middle East.
History changes always brought sacrifices. You cannot have your cake and eat it too.
Think about your future generations and the world you are creating for them right now.

a trabant is a total piece of krap...the "body" (a generous term) of this "car" is made of cardboard with a coating of shellac!!! Imagine how 'crashworthy' this 'car' is....if it so much as runs into a blowing piece of newspaper, it will shatter like a light bulb....look around the US of A...how many Trabants does one see? (none - a skateboard made in the USA is a better vehicle and far safer and probably faster!)

Oh boy...did I miss or what?

However, I do wonder where you dug up all that outdated information. Nothing, that was produced in the DDR was ever sought or exported to other countries in the "western hemisphere". I think that that was one of the main reasons why communism proved to be a non-functioning system and was doomed to collapse.

Wow guys – I just got home, read IWL posts and ROFL!
I know, Trabants were very durable cars, they still have many admirers (who re-model them) etc. but they were also a source of endless jokes.
One of those jokes says there might be a few Trabants in America dots:
“An American millionaire says – ‘I heard that Trabant was a good car, it is very hard to get one; I will try to order one from the factory and see if I will be lucky.’ So his secretary calls Trabant factory saying that his boss is actually willing to pay more for this car.
The management in factory freaks out. They say ‘hey, we cannot screw up this time; this delivery must be a masterpiece!’
So they fine tune the car really nice, interior in leather and expensive wood and they ship it overseas in 2 weeks – (it means they expedited the delivery) boat.
And this American millionaire invites his friends over to his house and says: ‘see, this Trabant must be an excellent company! In 2 weeks they send me a plastic model and it even runs!’ … Big Grin.”

Yes, you are right. And there is nothing wrong with it.
BTW after the unification of Germany - I remember many former DDR guys coming to Czechoslovakia and saying “soon we will be living as in the Western Germany” … very confident statement.

Hi guys! Just here are the recent news – for your information. The government of the USA recently asked Czech Republic (I think Poland too) if the USA can put a radio base on its territory (in order to locate and track ballistic missiles – safety precaution).
The reaction of Russia was a threat shuriken: if you two countries will do so, our ‘revenge’ will be substantial tank.

I could not believe this. They probably did not screw us up enough, they want more! B******S ban!

Yup, I know, and we're doing it (Poland).
How could we not to?
This is what we've been wanting for so many years, to have the actual real protection from the West.

And at the same time a revenge of some sort.
