Archaeologist Lawrence H. Keeley produces evidence of frequent deadly raids and occasional wholesale massacres over much of prehistoric North America, arguing that this archaeological evidence indicates that these massacres were not only prior to Western contact, but also more severe than anything reported in the ethnographic record for the region. For example, at a place called Crow Creek in South Dakota, archaeologists found a mass grave with the skeletons of over five hundred men, women, and children who had been killed, scalped, and mutilated — around 1325 A.D., a century and a half before Columbus. Only young women, whose bodies were not found in the grave, appear to have survived, probably as captives. Archaeologists working on the Saunaktuk Inuit site on the Beaufort Sea, in the Northwest Territories of Canada, have recovered the remains of many women and children that show violent death and dismemberment. In Arnhem Land in northern Australia, a study of warfare among the Murngin people in the late-19th century found that over a 20-year period no less than 200 out of 800 men, or 25 percent of all adult males, had been killed in intertribal warfare.
In the book The Wild Frontier: Atrocities during the American-Indian War from Jamestown Colony to Wounded Knee, amateur historian William M. Osborn sought to tally every recorded atrocity in the area that would eventually become the continental United States, from first contact (1511) to the closing of the frontier (1890), and determined that 9,156 people died from atrocities perpetrated by Native Americans, and 7,193 people died from atrocities perpetrated by whites. Osborn defines an atrocity as the murder, torture, or mutilation of civilians, the wounded and prisoners. Scholars generally agree that most of the indigenous population resided in Mesoamerica and South America, while about 10 percent resided in North America. Smallpox, typhus, influenza, diphtheria, measles, malaria, and other epidemics swept in after European contact, killing a large portion of the indigenous peoples of the Americas. In North America alone, at least 93 waves of epidemic disease swept through native populations between first contact and the early 20th century (alike Mongols brought the plague from central Asia to the Middle East and Europe. The Black Death is estimated to have killed between a third and two-thirds of Europe’s population by the late 1340s).
While much has been written concerning the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, surprisingly little attention has been given to the Islamic slave trade across the Sahara, the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. While the European involvement in the Trans Atlantic slave trade to the Americas lasted for just over three centuries, the Arab involvement in the slave trade has lasted fourteen centuries, and in some parts of the Muslim world is still continuing to this day. A comparison of the Islamic slave trade to the American slave trade reveals some interesting contrasts. While the mortality rate for slaves being transported across the Atlantic was as high as 10%, the percentage of slaves dying in transit in the Trans Sahara and East African slave trade was between 80 and 90%!
While many children were born to slaves in the Americas, and millions of their descendants are citizens in Brazil and the USA to this day, very few descendants of the slaves that ended up in the Middle East survive. While most slaves who went to the Americas could marry and have families, most of the male slaves destined for the Middle East were castrated, and most of the children born to the women were killed at birth. It is estimated that possibly as many as 11 million Africans were transported across the Atlantic (95% of which went to South and Central America, mainly to Portuguese, Spanish and French possessions. Only 5% of the slaves went to the United States). However, at least 28 million Africans were enslaved in the Muslim Middle East. While Christian Reformers spearheaded the anti-slavery abolitionist movements in Europe and North America, and Great Britain mobilised her Navy, throughout most of the 19th Century, to intercept slave ships and set the captives free, there was no comparable opposition to slavery within the Muslim world.
Slavery in Mauritania persists despite its abolition in 1980 and affects the descendants of black Africans abducted into slavery before generations, who live now in Mauritania as „black Moors“ or haratin and who partially still serve the „white Moors“, or bidhan, as slaves. The number of slaves in the country is not known exactly, but is estimated to be hundreds of thousands. Kevin Bales believes that the percentage of slaves is the highest in the world.
A Nigerian study has found that almost 8% of the population are slaves. In Niger, slavery was only criminalised in 2003 - and the local human rights organisation Timidria estimates 870,000 people are still held in bondage there. Most slaves in Niger today are the descendents of slaves who were kidnapped in wars and raids centuries ago, and were simply born into their status. The masters control the slaves totally, exploiting their labour, abusing them sexually and physically. There are documented cases of slaves being stripped naked in front of their families to humiliate them, of female slaves being raped by their owners, and even of male slaves being castrated by their owners as punishment. We meet Azagar, a former slave who managed to escape his master. “I was considered an animal,†he says. According to the American Anti-Slavery Group, black Africans in southern Sudan have been abducted for centuries in the Arabian slave trade, but the slave raids by militia armed by the government increased significantly after the 1989 military coup led by General Omar el-Bashir. Christian Solidarity International Claims that there are 200,000 slaves in Sudan.
There are about 3,000 castes and more than 25,000 subcastes in India. More than 165 million people in India are considered “Untouchable†— people tainted by their birth into a caste system that deems them impure, less than human. They are known as Dalits, and face discrimination in every aspect of their lives. Dalits are not allowed to drink from the same wells, attend the same temples, wear shoes in the presence of an upper caste, or drink from the same cups in tea stalls. India’s Untouchables are relegated to the lowest jobs, and live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated, paraded naked, beaten, and raped with impunity by upper-caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place. Merely walking through an upper-caste neighborhood is a life-threatening offense. One million Dalits work as manual scavengers, cleaning latrines and sewers by hand and clearing away dead animals. 40 million people in India, most of them Dalits, are bonded workers, many working to pay off debts that were incurred generations ago. These people work under slave-like conditions. The majority of Dalits live in segregation and experience violence, murder, rape and atrocities to the scale of 110,000 registered cases a year according to 2005 statistics. No one believes these numbers are anywhere close to the reality of crimes committed against Dalits. Most crimes go unreported.
More than 67,000 cases of rape and sexual assaults against children were reported last year in South Africa. Child welfare groups believe that the number of unreported incidents could be up to 10 times that number. There is a belief across South Africa that a virgin will cure a man of HIV or Aids… South Africa has the highest number of HIV-positive citizens in the world. According to official figures, one in eight South Africans are infected with the virus. Edith Kriel, a social worker who helps child victims in the Eastern Cape, said: “Child abusers are often relatives of their victims - even their fathers and providers.†Zulu and Xhosa and Swazi witchdoctors are telling the men that the only way to cure AIDS is to have *** with a White woman or a black virgin. According to University of Durban-Westville anthropology lecturer and researcher Suzanne Leclerc-Madlala, the myth that *** with a virgin is a cure for AIDS is not confined to South Africa. “Fellow AIDS researchers in Zambia, Zimbabwe and Nigeria have told me that the myth also exists in these countries and that it is being blamed for the high rate of sexual abuse against young children.â€

The supergiants of China (1.3 billion) and the Indian subcontinent (1.4 billion) will be less surprising, perhaps, than the current size of several countries not on the above list, such as Indonesia (242 million), Nigeria (129 million), or Mexico (106 million).
The causes of these vast increases are obvious enough: WESTERN medicine, applied to the eradication of communicable diseases and epidemics and to a decrease in infant mortality, in countries which have not undergone the “demographic transition†to smaller family size and lower rates of population growth, such as Britain experienced after about 1870, and in cultures where birth control and family limitation are shunned.

The 250,000-member Cherokee Nation will vote in a special election today whether to override a 141-year-old treaty and change the tribal constitution to bar “freedmen,†the descendants of former tribal slaves, from being members of the sovereign nation. But the Cherokee freedmen see the vote as less about self-determination than about discrimination and historical blinders. They see in the referendum hints of racism and a desire by some Cherokees to deny the tribe’s slave-owning past. People on both sides of the issue say the fight is also about tribal politics — the freedmen at times have been at odds with the tribal leadership — and about money.
Advocates of expelling the freedmen call it a matter of safeguarding tribal resources, which include a $350 million annual budget from federal and tribal revenue, and Cherokees’ share of a gambling industry that, for U.S. tribes overall, takes in $22 billion a year. “Don’t get taken advantage of by these people. They will **** you dry,†Darren Buzzard, an advocate of expelling the freedmen, wrote last summer in a widely circulated e-mail denounced by freedmen. “Don’t let black freedmen back you into a corner. PROTECT CHEROKEE CULTURE FOR OUR CHILDREN. FOR OUR DAUGHTER[S] … FIGHT AGAINST THE INFILTRATION.â€
Many of the Cherokees’ slaves accompanied the tribe when it was expelled from its traditional lands in North Carolina and Georgia and forced to migrate in 1838 and 1839 to Indian Territory, in what is now Oklahoma. The tribe fought for the Confederacy. In defeat, it signed a federal treaty in 1866 committing that its slaves, who had been freed by tribal decree during the war, would be absorbed as citizens of the Cherokee Nation.

The reason why there are more white women being raped is because they can easily be seen in the dark while the black women cannot be seen in the dark. I feel sorry for these white women who are the fruits of their white trash parents. But, do you know that the whites are now tanning to look darker? Go to beach and you would see mostly whites lying under the heating sun. That means many hate their own color.

Slave markets in Niger were closed during French colonisation, but in 2003 when a study was conducted by the British NGO Anti Slavery International, at least 43,000 Nigeriens were still kept as unpaid workers to do domestic tasks, and in some cases perform as concubines. Most live with nomadic Touareg and Arab groups in the north and west of Niger, according to ASI.
In 2003, Nigerien lawmakers reformed Niger's penal code to allow punishments of up to 30 years in prison for keeping slaves. But two years later, a ceremony meant to free 7,000 slaves in Inates, northwest Niger, turned into a farce after government officials apparently warned slave owners at the ceremony that they would be subject to the 30-year term if they released their slaves. No slaves were released. Later that year, the head of the Timidria NGO, Ilguilas Weila, was briefly arrested and accused of spreading false information about slavery.
