However, if you want to use the media these are just the major media outlets, there are smaller ones that are not controlled by them. The population of undocumented aliens tend to be focused in certain identifiable districts and states in the nation. Result of the 2010 Census will change the landscape of the political bases of the Republican and Democratic parties in those districts and eventually on a national scale.
The count of these undocumented aliens can hold in a sense a wild card since the result of the Survey can bring about changes in the number of districts and political color of each House district. Some states may lose the number of their representation in the House and the two parties can have a different number of representations in the House after November 2010 Mid-Term National Election.
Assuming that the final resolution of the CIR may have to be turned over to the Year 2010 after a wild forest fire of CIR debates blowing and spreading all over the country this year, one cannot discount the critical nature of changes in political landscape for the nation's party politics and its impact on the chances of a successful resolution of the CIR within the year 2010.
These undocumented aliens and, for that matter, immigrants in general, do not have a right to vote but can seize a momentum to influence the color of the new local and national political landscape by massively participating in the Census Survey. In a way, it can be more powerful, albeit invisible, than actual participation in the voting process.
In this regard, we urge the immigrant communities including both legal and illegal,, start the movement of organizing and engaging in massive campaigns for their participation in the upcoming Census Survey. Remember that behind the science, there is an ongoing struggle between the parties on the Census Survey, which resulted in resignation of a Republican Senator who participated in the Obama Cabinet as Secretary of Interior to return to the Senate.
The Department of Interior is the government agency that manages the National Census! "Invisible" voice can turn into a "powerful" voice for the direction of Nation's future, not to mention the stakes of immigrants. http://www.greencardfamily.com...09/news2009_0513.htm
So sad, we don't hear many stories like this from Iraq, we forget what really happened and happens over there with Al Queda..
Terrorists kidnap, torture boy to bully Iraqi policeman
FALLUJA, Iraq (CNN) -- Like many young boys, Khidir loves playing with toy cars and wants to be a policeman like his father when he grows up. But it was his father's very job that caused the tiny child to suffer the unimaginable. Khidir, now 8, was kidnapped and held hostage for two years by operatives with al Qaeda in Iraq.
Khidir was just 6 years old when he was savagely ripped away from his family, kidnapped by al Qaeda operatives in Iraq.
"They beat me with a shovel, they pulled my teeth out with pliers, they would go like this and pull it," said Khidir, now 8, demonstrating with his hands. "And they would make me work on the farm gathering carrots."
What followed was even more horrific, an ordeal that would last for two years in captivity. Khidir and his father spoke to CNN recently, more than half a year after his rescue by Iraqi police. Video Watch boy describe torture »
"This is where they hammered a nail into my leg and then they pulled it out," he says, lifting up his pant leg to show a tiny wound.
He says his captors also pulled out each of his tiny fingernails, broke both his arms, and beat him repeatedly on the side of the head with a shovel. He still suffers chronic headaches. He remembers them laughing as they inflicted the pain.
"I would think about my mommy and daddy," he replies, when asked how he managed to get through the agony.
His father, Abdul Qader, struggles for words. "When he tells me about how they would torture him, I can't tolerate it. I start crying," he says. "What hurts me the most is when they hammered a nail into his leg."
The father, a police officer, was sleeping at the police station in Falluja when his son was kidnapped. It was too dangerous to go home regularly. Although Falluja was no longer controlled by insurgents, assassinations against police were common.
"I woke up to the sound of a huge explosion ... and then I heard my name on the radio. I ran outside and they came to me saying your house was blown up," he says.
"When the police patrol came back, they all started kissing and comforting me," he continues. "I was asking, 'What's going on? Where is my family?' They told me that they took my son. This was a disaster. I went mad that day, I wasn't normal, I was hysterical."
Khidir's grandmother was at home with the family at the time.
"The kidnappers climbed the fence and kicked in the door," she says."They were screaming for Abdul Qader. I told them he's not here. They called me a liar and said we want his son. His son was hiding behind me, clutching my clothes. I said this is not his son. They hit me on the back with a rifle and ripped him out of my arms."
The last thing she remembers were his screams of "Granny, Granny!"
The attackers rigged the house with explosives and demolished it before taking off with the 6-year-old. The boy's grandmother and seven other family members rushed out of the home before it exploded.
"The kidnappers called me on the phone and demanded that some prisoners that we had be released or they would slit his throat," Khidir's father says. "But I said no to the release. I would not put killers back out on the street that would hurt other Muslims. So I thought to myself, 'Let my son be a martyr.' "
He even held a secret funeral for his little boy. He didn't want to tell the rest of the family that he had refused the kidnappers' ultimatum, allowing them to hope that he was still alive.
Last December, nearly two years later, police in Taji, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) away, received a tip that terrorists were holding kidnapped children.
"We thought that it was just a tip to ambush us, but we considered the mission as a sacrifice," said Iraqi police Capt. Khalib Ali. "Either we find the children and free them or face the danger and take the risk."
The tip led the Iraqi police to a rundown farm and a series of mud huts. Khidir's tiny body was twisted abnormally. And in another hut, they found another child. Two children are still believed to be with the kidnappers.
Al Qaeda in Iraq has historically kidnapped children for money, to pressure officials, and even to use in terrorist attacks.
For Khidir's father, it was as if his son had come back from the dead.
"He didn't recognize his mother or his grandmother," Abdul Qader says. "But then he saw me in uniform and ran to me. I went flying toward him to hug him. People said be careful; both his arms are broken. So I held him from his waist, and he hugged me, kissed me, smelled me, and then broke into a smile." advertisement
The father flips through old family photos -- all they were able to salvage from their destroyed home -- and notes some of the kidnappers are still at large. He still fears for his son's safety, but says he won't quit the police force.
"Never, never," he says. "If I leave the police force, if others leave the force, who will protect us from the terrorists? We are the only ones."

Report: Edwards to Admit Fathering Ex-Mistress' Child
by Brian Montopoli
(CBS/ AP)Former North Carolina Senator and Democratic Presidential and Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards is expected to admit that he is the father of the 18-month-old daughter of former mistress Rielle Hunter, sources tell CBS affiliate WRAL.
Edwards acknowledged the affair last summer but has previously denied that he fathered the child, whose name is Frances.
As WRAL notes, longtime Edwards aide Andrew Young initially claimed paternity but is now writing a book in which he will say Edwards is the girl's actual father.
Hunter testified last week at the federal courthouse where a grand jury is investigating whether campaign funds were illegally used to buy her silence.
The sources told WRAL Edwards could acknowledge paternity before the investigation concludes.

Mayor of New Jersey Town Vows to Fight Qaddafi Visit
Tuesday, August 25, 2009 By Joshua Rhett Miller
The mayor of a New Jersey town where Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi plans to stay when he addresses the U.N. General Assembly next month says the "terrorist" should reconsider.
"This is an affront to the 33 families who live in New Jersey and lost their relatives because of him when they blew up Pan Am 103," Englewood Mayor Michael Wildes told FOXNews.com. "You can't buy that back. You can't give them their lives and memories back."
Qaddafi stoked international ire last week when he oversaw Libya's hero's welcome for Adbel Baset al-Megrahi, the lone man convicted in the 1988 bombing of Pan American Flight 103, which killed 270 people. Al-Megrahi, who is dying of cancer, was freed from a Scottish jail and returned to Libya on compassionate grounds.
The bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland, is thought to be the work of Libyan intelligence and killed all 259 people aboard the flight, including 33 from New Jersey.
"As a Jew, I'm embarrassed and mortified to host him," Wildes continued. "I'm really upset that a financier of terrorism is coming to our shores. This is not acceptable and we need to make sure he does not come. This man embraced a convicted terrorist and is, at his core, a financier of terrorism himself."
Wildes said police costs to provide security for Qaddafi at a Libyan-owned estate on Palisade Avenue would total at least $20,000 per day. And the Libyans "haven't paid a nickel in property taxes in over 30 years," Wildes said.
U.S. Rep Steve Rothman, whose district includes Englewood, said city officials learned 26 years ago that the Libyan Mission to the United Nations had purchased the estate. Rothman said local officials hammered out a deal with the U.S. State Department limiting its use to recreational activities by the ambassador and his family. Qaddafi was expressly forbidden to live there, Rothman said.
State Department officials told FOXNews.com no decision had been made on the issue as of early Tuesday.
"I would urge any — any foreign leader to be sensitive to the concerns of victims of the most horrific terrorist attack before September 11th affecting American citizens," Ian Kelly told reporters Monday. "No decision has been made about where anybody's going to pitch a tent."
Meanwhile, other residents in the upscale community of 28,000 residents say Qaddafi, who has ruled Libya since 1969, is persona non grata.
"This is what happens when you have the path of appeasement," said Susan Cohen, of Cape May Court House, N.J. "He's getting everything he wants, and I guess that includes a trip to the state of New Jersey, which certainly doesn't need this."
Cohen's daughter Theodora, who was 20, died in the 1988 bombing.
"It's very peaceful here and we'd like to keep it that way, but what can we do if the government lets him in," said Bennie Wong, 58, who lives near the estate.
Another nearby resident, Dr. Joel Kopelman, 58, said he didn't want Qaddafi living in the town if the leader sees al-Megrahi as a hero.
Nicole DiCocco, a spokeswoman the Libyan Emassby in Washington, D.C., confirmed that the Libyan government owned the property but said it hasn't been decided if Qaddafi will stay there.
Wildes, for his part, said he plans on continuing to work with State Department officials to block the stay, which could last up to two weeks, he said.
"He has no business staying in my city even for a night," Wildes said. "People are mortified this is happening. They're offended, and frankly speaking, I don't blame them."

Gee, guess if I had broken the law and gone to prison, I might have stood a chance of getting a stimulus check this year. Go figure. And you want to put health care in the hands of our government? No thanks.
Gov. Performing Audit to see if Stimulus Checks went Mistakenly to Prisoners, Fugitives, and Dead
(AP) The federal government sent about 3,900 economic stimulus payments of $250 each this spring to people who were in no position to use the money to help stimulate the economy: prison inmates.
The checks were part of the massive economic recovery package approved by Congress and President Barack Obama in February. About 52 million Social Security recipients, railroad retirees and those receiving Supplemental Security Income were eligible for the one-time checks.
Prison inmates are generally ineligible for federal benefits. However, 2,200 of the inmates who received checks got to keep them because, under the law, they were eligible, said Mark Lassiter, a spokesman for the Social Security Administration. They were eligible because they weren't incarcerated in any one of the three months before the recovery package was enacted.
"The law specified that any beneficiary eligible for a Social Security benefit during one of those months was eligible for the recovery payment," Lassiter said.
The other 1,700 checks? That was a mistake.
Checks were sent to those inmates because government records didn't accurately show they were in prison, Lassiter said. He said most of those checks were returned by the prisons.
"We are currently reviewing each of those cases to determine whether or not the recovery payment was due," Social Security Commissioner Michael J. Astrue said in a statement issued Wednesday evening. "Where we determine payment was not due, we will take aggressive action to recover each of these erroneous payments."
The Boston Herald first reported that the checks were sent to inmates.
The inspector general for the Social Security Administration is performing an audit to make sure no checks went to ineligible recipients, spokesman George E. Penn said.
The audit, which had already been planned, will examine whether checks incorrectly went to inmates, dead people, fugitive felons or people living outside the U.S., Penn said.
The $787 billion economic recovery package included $2 million for the inspector general to oversee the provisions handled by the Social Security Administration. The audit is part of those efforts, Penn said. There is no timetable for its conclusion.
The federal government processed $13 billion in stimulus payments. About $425,000 was incorrectly sent to inmates.

UAE Seizes North Korean Weapons Shipment to Iran (Update1)
By Bill Varner
Aug. 28 (Bloomberg) -- The United Arab Emirates has seized a ship carrying North Korean weapons bound for Iran, in violation of a United Nations arms embargo, diplomats said.
The UAE two weeks ago notified the UN Security Council of the seizure, according to the diplomats, who spoke on condition they aren’t named because the communication hasn’t been made public.
The council committee that monitors enforcement of UN sanctions against North Korea wrote a letter to Iran asking for an explanation and one to the UAE expressing appreciation for the cooperation, the envoys said. No response has been received or further action taken, they said.
The UAE and Iranian missions to the UN didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The Financial Times reported the weapons seizure earlier today.
The Security Council voted on June 12 to adopt a resolution that punishes North Korea for its recent nuclear- bomb test and missile launches through cargo inspections and enforcement of restrictions on financial transactions. The measure calls for the interdiction at seaports, airports or in international waters of any cargo suspected of containing nuclear or missile-related materials going to or from North Korea.
Iran is under three sets of UN sanctions for its refusal to halt uranium enrichment, a process to isolate a uranium isotope needed to generate fuel for a nuclear power reactor or, in higher concentrations, to make a weapon.
Iran denies allegations by the U.S. and some of its major allies that it seeks an atomic weapon or the means to build one, insisting the nuclear work is intended to generate electricity.
U.S. President Barack Obama has said the Iranian government must respond by late September to his request for new talks on curbing its nuclear program. Iran last month said work is under way on proposals that may provide the basis for renewed talks.

If you're one of those people whom mosquitoes tend to favor, maybe it's because you aren't sufficiently stressed-out.
Insects have very keen powers of smell that direct them to their targets. But for researchers trying to figure out what attracts or repels the pests, sorting through the 300 to 400 distinct chemical odors that the human body produces has proved daunting. [LAB] Michael C. Witte
Now scientists at Rothamsted Research in the U.K. have been making headway at understanding why some people can end up with dozens of bites after a backyard barbecue, while others remain unscathed. The researchers have identified a handful of the body's chemical odors—some of which may be related to stress—that are present in significantly larger concentrations in people that the bugs are happier to leave alone. If efforts to synthesize these particular chemicals are successful, the result could be an all-natural mosquito repellent that is more effective and safer than products currently available.
"Mosquitoes fly through an aerial soup of chemicals, but can home in on those that draw them to humans," says James Logan, a researcher at Rothamsted, one of the world's oldest agricultural-research institutions. But when the combination of human odors is wrong, he says, "the mosquito fails to recognize this signal as a potential blood meal."
The phenomenon that some people are more prone to mosquito bites than others is well documented. In the 1990s, chemist Ulrich Bernier, now at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service, began looking for what he calls the "magic compounds" that attract mosquitoes. His research helped to show that mosquitoes are attracted to humans by blends of common chemicals such as carbon dioxide, released from the skin and by exhaling, and lactic acid, which is present on the skin, especially when we exercise. But none of the known attractant chemicals explained why mosquitoes preferred some people to others.
Rothamsted's Dr. Logan says the answer isn't to be found in attractant chemicals. He and colleagues observed that everyone produces chemicals that mosquitoes like, but those who are unattractive to mosquitoes produce more of certain chemicals that repel them. Misguided Mosquitoes
"The repellents were what made the difference," says Dr. Logan, who is interested in the study of how animals communicate using smell. These chemicals may cloud or mask the attractive chemicals, or may disable mosquitoes from being able to detect those attractive odors, he suggests. More From WSJ's Health Coverage
* Health Journal: When Winning Isn't Everything * Informed Patient: Power of Fast Response * What's Your Workout: Terrell Owens * More from Health & Wellness
Besides delivering annoying bites, mosquitoes cause hundreds of millions of cases of disease each year. As many as 500 million cases of malaria are contracted globally each year, and more than one million people die from it, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Mosquitoes can also spread West Nile virus, dengue fever, yellow fever and other illnesses.
Currently the most effective repellents on the market often contain a chemical known as DEET, which has been associated in some studies with potential safety concerns, such as cancer and Gulf War syndrome. It also damages materials made of plastic. The federal Environmental Protection Agency has determined that DEET, when used as directed, is safe.
The Rothamsted team set out to get the mosquitoes' viewpoint. The researchers separated human volunteers into two groups—those who were attractive to mosquitoes and those who weren't. They then put each of the volunteers into body-size foil bags for two hours to collect their body odors. Using a machine known as a chromatograph, the scientists were able to separate the chemicals. They then tested each of them to see how the mosquitoes responded. By attaching microelectrodes to the insects' antennae, the researchers could measure the electrical impulses that are generated when mosquitoes recognize a chemical.
Dr. Logan and his team have found only a small number of body chemicals—seven or eight—that were present in significantly different quantities between those people who were attractive to mosquitoes and those who weren't. They then put their findings to the test. For this they used a so-called Y-tube olfactometer that allows mosquitoes to make a choice and fly toward or away from an individual's hand. After applying the chemicals thought to be repellant on the hands of individuals known to be attractive, Dr. Logan found that the bugs either flew in the opposite direction or weren't motivated by the person's smell to fly at all.
The chemicals were then tested to determine their impact on actual biting behavior. Volunteers put their arms in a box containing mosquitoes, one arm coated with repellent chemicals and the other without, to see if the arm without the coating got bitten more. Significant Repellency
The group's latest paper, published in March in the Journal of Medical Entomology, identified two compounds with "significant repellency." One of the compounds, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, is a skin-derived compound that has the odor of toned-down nail-polish remover, according to George Preti, an organic chemist at the Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, who is involved in a separate line of research into insect-biting behavior. The other, identified in the paper as geranylacetone, has a pleasant odor, though there is some question about whether the chemical is formed by the human biochemical process or is picked up in the environment, Dr. Preti says.
Dr. Logan declined to comment about the specific chemicals because of proprietary concerns. He says the findings have been patented and the group is working with a commercial company to develop the compounds into a usable insect repellent. One issue that still needs to be resolved: how to develop a formulation of the repellent chemicals that will stay on the skin, rather than quickly evaporating as they do naturally. The hope is to get a product to market within a year or two, he says.
Some of the chemicals researchers identified are believed to be related to stress, Dr. Logan says. Previous research has shown that these particular chemicals could be converted from certain other molecules and this could be as a result of oxidation in the body at times of stress, he says. However, it's not clear if the chemicals observed by the Rothamsted researchers were created in this way, and research is continuing to answer this and other questions.
Dr. Logan suggests that mosquitoes may deem hosts that emit more of these chemicals to be diseased or injured and "not a good quality blood meal." Proteins in the blood are necessary for female mosquitoes to produce fertile eggs, and Dr. Logan says it might be evolutionarily advantageous for mosquitoes to detect and avoid such people. Other Research
Other research includes an effort by scientists at the University of California, Riverside, who published a paper in the journal Nature last week identifying a recently discovered class of molecules that inhibit fruit flies' and mosquitoes' ability to detect carbon dioxide. Mosquitoes can detect carbon dioxide emissions from long ranges, so turning off the ability to detect the gas, perhaps by releasing the inhibiting molecules into the environment, may be a way of keeping the bugs at bay, the researchers suggest. Another team, at the Monell Chemical Senses Center, is launching a study into whether the taste of human skin and blood are related to the insects' interest in biting certain individuals.

Tibetan Mastiff 'World's Most Expensive Dog' With $582G Price Tag
Thursday, September 10, 2009
Sept. 9: A woman, identified by only the surname ****, poses with her $582,000 Tibetan Mastiff.
A black Tibetan Mastiff, 31 inches high and answering to the name of "Yangtze River Number Two," is believed to have broken the world record as the most expensive dog after a Chinese woman paid $582,000 for the “priceless” canine.
In keeping with its record-shattering status, according to local reports the 18-month-old dog arrived at its new owner’s home in stupendously excessive style. A motorcade of 30 luxury cars cruised to the airport in Xi’an to take delivery of Yangtze. Enchanted onlookers gathered to celebrate the arrival of the city’s new resident.
If the figure of $582,000 is accurate, it makes Yangtze River Number Two possibly the most expensive pet dog in history. Earlier this year, a family in Florida paid $155,000 for a Labrador called Lancelot Encore. That price included the cost of cloning the original Lancelot.
The young millionaire, according to one report on a Chinese Web site, fell in love with the dog while on a breeding trip to Qinghai province. The woman, referred to only as Mrs. ****, had been travelling to the town of Yushu with a Tibetan Mastiff that she already owned with a view to mating it with the famously pure-blooded hounds of that region.
While there though she spotted a dog known as White Root and knew immediately that she had to make it hers. Another version of the story suggests that the woman had spent some years in the quest for the perfect Tibetan Mastiff and was satisfied that the dog she found in Yushu was it.
“Gold has a price, but this Tibetan Mastiff doesn’t,” the young woman reportedly said on her return home.
It remains unclear why she renamed the dog Yangtze River Number Two, though the process appears to have taken place while **** and her dogs were returning from the breeders.

At it again... A "family values" Repub caught with his verbal pants down. Davah, I didn't know you were a CA lawmaker? LOL
Calif. lawmaker ousted from inquiry into s-ex talk
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A California lawmaker who listened and asked questions as a fellow assemblyman boasted about extramarital affairs has been removed from the panel investigating the conversation.
Assembly Speaker Karen Bass removed Republican Assemblyman Jeff Miller of Corona from the ethics committee on Thursday.
The move comes a day after Republican Mike Duvall of Yorba Linda resigned from the Assembly when a videotape of the conversation became public. The racy banter took place in July during a break in a committee hearing.
Duvall, who is married, issued a statement saying he is not admitting to having s-ex with the two female lobbyists. He said he engaged only in "inappropriate storytelling."
If it's inappropriate..why do it??!! He's just resigned.
Coast Guard Admits it Was Having Training Exercise -- Right Near Pentagon Memorial
By NED POTTER Sept. 11, 2009
Washington, D.C., residents mourning the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks this morning heard an eerie echo just an hour later -- reports that a Coast Guard vessel had fired shots at a boat in the Potomac River near the Pentagon.
But after half an hour of anxiety, the Coast Guard and local police said the whole thing was a training exercise, and no shots were fired at all.
Network news programs including "Good Morning America" broke into regular coverage to report the incident, and CNN went to blanket coverage.
As word spread of the false alarm, Frances Townsend, former Homeland Security adviser in the Bush administration, got angry -- calling the exercise "felony stupidity" in a CNN interview.
Why hold such a drill on Sept. 11, with memorial services still in progress? A Coast Guard information officer, John Edwards, said it was part of a "standardization training" drill. He told ABC News the Coast Guard trains this way all the time.

Coast Guard Commandant Thad Allen was at the Pentagon for the Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony this morning, where President Obama spoke. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, according to one source, was unaware the exercise was to take place.
About an hour after the scare, the Coast Guard put out a statement:
"We are still gathering information of how this training event might have been misconstrued as an actual incident. We will conduct a thorough review of this incident."
It continued, "The best way that we in the Coast Guard can remember Sept. 11 and our security obligations to the nation is to be always ready and this requires constant training and exercise. To ensure the appropriate readiness posture we conduct training scenarios across the nation on a daily basis."
The Coast Guard promised a news conference, and a fuller explantion, by early afternoon.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said he was not aware of any heads-up given by the Coast Guard to the White House about its training exercise in the Potomac River, and suggested any panic that resulted was the fault of the media, not law enforcement.
Gibbs said the "reporting was based on listening to a police scanner" and wasn't "verified" before being reported.
Asked if 9/11 was an appropriate day for such a training exercise, Gibbs said, "I tend not to question law enforcement trying to keep the nation safe."
He said media should "check before reporting" such events, and suggested other training exercises are likely going on right now that we don't know about.
He rejected any comparison with the Air Force One flyover of Manhattan.

Exercise occurs near where President Obama was observing 9/11 anniversary

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. Coast Guard promised a "thorough review" after a training incident Friday along the Potomac River briefly triggered concerns about the security of President Obama on the eighth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
The Coast Guard will "take a good, hard look" at how it handled the routine training exercise to determine if the security scare that followed could have been avoided, Vice Adm. John Currier said.
Federal agency emergency operations centers were not aware of or notified about the exercise on the Potomac, and they began implementing response procedures, a federal source said.
Even the police department's Harbor Patrol, which is responsible for patrolling the river, was not notified, law enforcement sources in Washington said.
The patrol has now demanded the Coast Guard notify it in the future before any training exercises on the Potomac, the sources said.
The Coast Guard did not alert other agencies when it conducted the exercise, Currier said. He said the U.S. Secret Service, which protects the president, was not notified, stressing that the exercise was routine and happens four times a week.
Obama lays wreath to mark Pentagon attack The training incident took place as Obama was traveling across the Memorial Bridge following an event at the Pentagon shortly before 10 a.m. ET. CNN personnel saw what appeared to be a Coast Guard vessel working to prevent a boat from trying to enter a security zone.
Minutes later, there were reports on police scanners that the Coast Guard fired 10 rounds of ammunition.
A Department of Homeland Security representative later said no shots of any kind had been fired.
"Reports in the media were based on overheard radio calls made over a training frequency," the Coast Guard said in a statement.
The Secret Service said Obama was back at the White House by the time reports surfaced of shots being fired.
In addition, the Federal Aviation Administration put a "ground halt" on a small number of flights Friday at Reagan National Airport after the security scare, Currier said.

How come when you think you have the latest, greatest technology, they always manage to knock you back into time? LOL!! And they will price gouge the h.eck out of this 3D for the first few years just like they did HDTV's. Best to wait on the purchase of this one if you want to save some bucks.

As always! The problem is by the time companies launch the "new" technology onto the consumer market, it's actually been around for some time. HD video codecs like HDV have been in existence since 2003. Earlier professional systems like Sony's D1 since 1986. I suspect this 3D stuff has been in existence for a while.

Commentary: Joe, Kanye, Serena -- aren't they special?»

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- Thanks to Joe, Kanye, Serena, and other misfits, a lot of people are talking about how society is undergoing a rash of rudeness.
That's not completely accurate. It's more like a rise in self-centeredness.
Among the self-centered: Congressman Joe Wilson, rapper Kanye West and tennis star Serena Williams. But this phenomenon isn't limited to celebrities and previously anonymous backbenchers in Congress basking in their 15 minutes.
There are many people out there, in all walks of life, who think they're more significant than they really are. Plagued with an exaggerated sense of self-importance, they feel entitled to do whatever they want, whenever they want to do it no matter whom it hurts.
The self-centered rarely think about the consequences because they're too busy claiming what they see as their rightful place in the spotlight. And when they're criticized for letting their narcissism get the best of them and face the wrath of their colleagues or the disapproval of their fans, they might apologize. But, even then, they often don't do a very good job of it because their heart's not in it.
They don't feel genuine remorse but they've been told by their press secretaries and publicists to fake it as best they can as part of the damage control. They mouth the words because they consider it to be in their own best interests. It's always about them.
South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford made matters worse at home by apologizing for an affair with someone he called his "soul mate."
Singer Chris Brown -- who began performing community service in Virginia this week in connection with his sentence for assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna -- publicly apologized for the abuse and then played the victim when Oprah Winfrey criticized him.
So how did this virus of self-centeredness get in our national bloodstream?
Some in the media blame the coarseness of talk radio and the Internet where the most extreme voices are the loudest and where people tune in not to hear different points of view but to have their own views validated. That's no picnic for those of us who won't be boxed in. I've had liberals comment on this site that, as someone who sometimes voices conservative opinions, my column belongs somewhere. But, when I recently hosted a radio show, and expressed liberal views, an angry caller protectively informed me that "AM talk radio is for conservatives."
Others blame the look-at-me-I'm-so-special culture bred by egocentric social networking sites such as Facebook, My Space, and Twitter. With thousands of "followers" caring enough to take time from their own day to shadow you through yours, is it any wonder that the followed are getting big heads as they "tweet" what they had for breakfast?
But I'm old-school. I believe that what matters most is not what happens at your computer but around your dinner table. When we consider the reasons for this rash of self-centeredness, I think most of it comes down to just one thing: bad parenting.
Americans have reared at least one generation of kids, or maybe two, to think of themselves as the last bottle of soda pop in the desert. We said we were building children's self-esteem so they could be successful, but it never occurred to us that giving kids what psychologists call "cheap self-esteem" could do more harm than good by making our kids think they're 10-feet tall and bulletproof when they're neither.
Besides, what many of these parents were really doing was feeding their own egos; by telling your kids they're special, it confirms that you're special for having such special kids. Isn't that special?
Experts who study the generations say that, thanks to reliable birth control and legalized abortion, the last couple of generations have been the "most wanted" in American history. When they arrived, we drove them around in minivans with signs that broadcast: "Caution: Baby on Board." And when they went to school or summer camp, we made sure everyone got a trophy so no one got their feelings hurt.
One person who has zeroed in on this is Jean Twenge, an associate professor of psychology at San Diego State University. Twenge has spent more than a dozen years examining generational differences. Her research includes comparing studies on the self-esteem of more than 60,000 college students across the country from 1968 to 1994.
As a result of this, and the feedback of hundreds of her own students, Twenge has written two highly informed books on our self-centered culture. This year, she put out, "The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement," with co-author and fellow psychologist W. Keith Campbell.
Twenge recalled the student who asked her to postpone a final exam because it interfered with his plans for a birthday outing to Las Vegas. She also heard from a person who runs a company in Minnesota who said it was not uncommon for employees to call into the office and say they were too tired to come to work.
In their book, Twenge and Campbell list the factors fueling the entitlement mentality. They include celebrity culture and the media, which teach Americans that they're entitled to be famous.
"Narcissism is absolutely toxic to society," Twenge told me when I interviewed her about her book a few months ago. "When faced with common resources, narcissists take more for themselves and they leave less for others."
And, as usual, diagnosing the ailment is easier than curing it. But cure it we must. Before we learn all the wrong lessons and come to think that the abnormal is normal, and the intolerable is acceptable. iReport.com: Why so many outbursts?
A friend who used to work in the Bush White House tells me that some Republican voters are already flooding the Congressional switchboard and pushing the idea of Joe Wilson running for president in 2012. No lie!
We had better work fast.
