BNP may face membership injunction

1 hour 56 mins ago

The British National Party is facing the threat of a legal injunction which could lead to fines or even imprisonment over a potential breach of race discrimination law by its membership policies. Skip related content

The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) gave the far-right party until July 20 to amend its constitution to ensure it did not discriminate against members on grounds of race.

BNP leader Nick Griffin said: "Our legal counsel says that it is very clear that we are a Section 25/Section 26 exempted organisation because we are here for specific ethnic groups."

EHRC officials said they believed the BNP's constitution and membership criteria may discriminate on the grounds of race and colour, contrary to the Race Relations Act. The party's membership criteria appeared to restrict membership to those within what the BNP regarded as particular "ethnic groups" and those whose skin colour was white, according to the commission.

But Mr Griffin said: "It is nothing to do with 'white'. We are really talking here about the English, the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh, collectively the people who are ethnically British."

Asked if that meant a black Welshman would be welcome in the party, he said: "There is no such thing as a black Welshman. You can have a black Briton; you can't have a black Welshman. Welsh is about people who live in Wales since the end of the last ice age."

He went on: "We would be happy to act for him, I would be happy to have him in Britain but we would not have him in our party because our party is here to act for the indigenous people of these islands who have been turned into second-class citizens by people like (EHRC head) Trevor Philips. Until he stops his discrimination against us, we are very reluctant to change how we organise to act for our people."

Legal director John Wadham said: "The commission's statutory role includes a duty to investigate possible breaches of discrimination law and take action where appropriate.

"The legal advice we have received indicates that the British National Party's constitution and membership criteria, employment practices and provision of services to constituents and the public may breach discrimination laws which all political parties are legally obliged to uphold. We await a response from the BNP to our letter before deciding what further action we may take. Litigation or enforcement action can be avoided by the BNP giving a satisfactory response to our letter."

It is believed that it is the first time the EHRC has threatened such legal action, which could lead to fines or possible imprisonment.

Where in the world is South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford?

The governor went missing four days ago and his state is in a tizzy.

Sanford ditched his security detail on Thursday, missed Father's Day weekend with his family, and didn't show up at work Monday.

Neither his wife, nor the state's lieutenant governor, nor police officials know where he is, South Carolina newspapers reported.

My guess is he won't be re-elected next time around!

Sanford says he was in Argentina, not on Appalachian Trail

Posted: 08:35 AM ET

(CNN) — Gov. Mark Sanford did not spend the last five days hiking the Appalachian Trail — as his staff had indicated — but was instead in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the South Carolina Republican told The State newspaper Wednesday.

Spotted returning from the trip in the Atlanta airport Wednesday morning, Sanford said he had considered hiking the Appalachian Trail after his state's busy legislative season came to end but instead decided on a more "exotic" trip.

"I wanted to do something exotic. It's a great city," said Sanford of his five-day getaway that appeared to leave his entire staff and family in the dark about his whereabouts. Sanford also said no one else accompanied him on the trip.

Sanford wouldn't tell the newspaper exactly what he did in the South American country, besides take a drive along the coastline.

The South Carolina governor also said he hadn't planned to return until Thursday, but came back earlier after his chief of staff contacted him to say the story of his whereabouts was drawing widespread media attention.

Sanford expressed surprise the story was attracting such attention, saying it's not unusual for him to take such trips.

"I would get out of the bubble I am in," he said.

In a short interview with CNN Tuesday, Sanford's wife Jenny said she still has not talked to her husband since he left last Thursday and did not know where he went.

I'm sure it was all innocent. After all. Someone needs to account for the S. Carolina assets in Argentina.

Not far off the truth davdah. I just watched his press conference and it seems it's all about him and a woman in Argentina. Surprise surprise. Was rather a long, rambling excuse he made, the usual "I was unfaithful to my wife and family" bit..yada, yada...

He's resigned from the GOP Governors Assoc. and I suspect will end up stepping down from the SC Governor position too.

Gov. Sanford isn't the only snake in South Carolina . . .

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,528971,00.html

Huge Burmese Pythons Released in South Carolina
Wednesday, June 24, 2009

AIKEN, S.C. — One by one, seven slithering Burmese pythons were dumped into a snake pit surrounded by 400 feet of reinforced fence at the Savannah River Ecology Lab in South Carolina.

As they were released last week by a handful of scientists, some of the serpents hissed and lunged, baring their fangs. Others coiled up under the brush. Two slid into a pond in the center of the pit, disappearing in a snaking trail of bubbles.

Some were more than 10 feet long and thicker than a forearm. And for the next year all of them will call this snake pit — an enclosed area of tangled brush and trees — home.

Ecologists will track the exotic pythons, all captured in Florida, to determine if they can survive in climates a few hundred miles to the north. Using implanted radio transmitters and data recorders, the scientists will monitor the pythons' body temperature and physical condition.

The test could show whether the giant imported snakes, which can grow up to lengths of 25 feet, are able to spread throughout the Southeast.

The fast-growing population of snakes has been invading southern Florida's ecosystem since 1992, when scientists speculate a bevy of Burmese pythons was released into the wild after Hurricane Andrew shattered many pet shop terrariums.

Now scientists fear this invasive species is silently slithering northward.

"They of course have an impact on native species," said herpetologist Whit Gibbons, a professor of ecology at the University of Georgia and a member of the python project. "If you have a big old python eating five times as much as another species that eats the same prey, it's a competitive thing." The pythons compete with alligators, among other top predators.

Gibbons said a human is "just another prey item" to a python — especially a small human. Pythons are constrictor snakes and have been known to eat people in their native areas of Southeast Asia, he added.

While pythons don't make a habit of attacking people and most aren't large enough to eat a person, Gibbons called the possibility a "nightmare."

"What about the first kitty cat they eat? Or the first little poodle? They'd love poodles, I imagine," he said.

Mike Dorcas, a professor at Davidson College in North Carolina, has sliced open pythons in Florida to find the remains of white-tailed deer, bobcats and large birds.

Dorcas is leading the experiment at the Savannah River Ecology Lab as part of a collaboration between the U.S. Geological Service, the National Park Service and the University of Florida.

He was prompted by a study released last year showing that the native habitat of Burmese pythons in Asia is a climate match for much of the southeastern U.S.

"The question is really, well, can they survive in a place like South Carolina or North Carolina or Arkansas or Tennessee?" Dorcas said.

One day before releasing the pythons into the pit, Dorcas snapped on latex gloves and surgically implanted radio transmitters into all seven. The transmitters enable scientists to keep track of the pythons' location and allow them to hunt down any that manage to escape.

What are the chances of escape? "We never want to say never. We've made the enclosure as snake-proof as possible but we've taken some other precautions," Dorcas said, noting that all of the pythons are males, so they wouldn't be able to reproduce.

The ecologists also inserted micro data loggers into each snake to record the internal temperature of the python every hour. After a year, Dorcas will remove the chips and download the information into a computer to discover how the snakes thermoregulate in a cooler climate.

Pythons are masters of disguise — slippery and quick — and all but one of the serpents was invisible within minutes of being deposited into the pit.

So counting pythons in the wild is a daunting task. Scientists don't have an accurate estimate of how many pythons are in Florida.

"It's certainly in the thousands, or tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands," said

Dumb a.ss is right. Apparently his wife knew about this affair 4 months ago according to some sources I read. She gets kudos for keeping this under the wraps. I hope the Argentine honey dumped his sorry behind and that the wife leaves him too. You get what you deserve in life.

Did he take trips to Argentina on the public dime?? If so, he should step down.

Some Mark Sanford trips were taxpayer-paid

South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford has taken at least three taxpayer-paid trips to Argentina, however, it’s unclear whether he met his girlfriend during any of them.

At his news conference in Columbia Wednesday, Sanford said he paid for his most recent trip with his own money. “It was my own ticket,” he told reporters.

But sometime after his 2002 election as governor, Sanford traveled to Argentina on the dime of the South Carolina Department of Commerce.

The trip was in June 2008, after he met the woman. Sanford said Wednesday he met her eight years ago, though a romantic relationship did not develop until one year ago.
